One of these dorsal fins is not like the other.

Short finned pilot whales in the Sea of Cortez sometimes associate with the local population of bottlenose dolphins (bottom right). Pilot whales are incredibly intelligent and live in large family groups where they likely share what’s called a “sense of self” meaning that they see their families as the same entity as themselves rather than as individuals. This means that pilot whales feel deeply the emotions, stress, and empathy of their group, fascinating for a large, long-lived animal.

As deep diving animals, we don’t often get to see pilot whales at the surface for too long, so this encounter was very special.

My last dive in Argentina was magical ✨ a stunning kelp forest, amazing brittle stars on the sea floor, lots of slugs and snails, and some beautiful light coming through the canopy. This was the same dive I saw the Phronima, the inspiration for the alien in Alien (scroll back a bit in my feed for that one), which was so cool I could almost forget about the beautiful stalked jellies in the shallows, another favorite critter of mine.

Stalked jellies are basically jellyfish that decided they didn’t want to go anywhere so they settle down on kelp and sway in the swell. I think they’re quite pleasing to watch, just like moving jellies 🪼

A beautiful gem from earlier this year in a Patagonian kelp forest. Love these little sea stars on the giant kelp blades!

A stunner of a tiny amphipod (a type of crustacean) here in southeast Alaska, Chromopleustes oculatus (probably). I never really paid very close attention to the amphipods here, they’re small - this one about the size of a grain of rice - and fast and there’s so many other things to look at while SCUBA diving here, but now I’m hooked. Those colors are stunning. I love diving here, and even after spending hundreds of hours underwater in Alaska I’m still finding lots of new things!

Thanks 🫶🏼

I was very excited to see so many of the famous Darwin’s Finches on this trip to the Galápagos Islands - even though Charles Darwin only spent 5 weeks here, his hypotheses turned theories changed the Western world.

This male ground finch was fun to watch as he foraged on seeds upside down!

Prepare for Launch 🚀

A sunrise pod of common dolphins 🐬 and if you look closely, you can see the remora fish attached to the side of the dolphin! Awesome way to start the day in Galapagos last week!

Double Parked 🕊️🦆

This morning, while watching juvenile brown pelicans feed on small fish right at the shoreline, these Brown Noddys were trying to sn**ch a free meal. As the pelican would start to pull their heads up out of the water, the Noddy would land on their head and wait until shaken off. Fun way to start the day here in Galapagos!

Antipathes galapagensis Black Coral 🪸🖤

Heading to the Galapagos today! Excited to spend time above and below the water in the southernmost extent of this coral species (although I dont think I’ll see it, so this photo is from Baja California, the shallowest I’ve seen ANY black coral)
