Cholly Atkins, a tap veteran from the vaudeville era hired by Berry Gordy in the mid-1960s, built every foundational move from scratch: the "stop" gesture in "Stop! In the Name of Love," the "train pull" in "Midnight Train to Georgia," and nearly every synchronized step the Temptations ever performed.
