“No One Said It Was Fair” confronts the expectation that struggle and sacrifice are simply the price of belonging. Crowned in thorns, the coyote becomes both outsider and martyr, enduring a system that was never designed to treat everyone equally. The work questions why those kept at the margins are expected to suffer for the privilege of being included.
Featured in the lower corner is a 1970s cartoon where kids are playing a game of cards where just like in life, the rules “spoil all the fun”.

Real talk: Joe, Colleena, and I do A LOT for our art community. Our pockets are no where as deep as our hearts, and yet we never charge you to show or attend our events! We always find ways promote opportunities for desert artists and Musicans. We work hard, and while others in the community have forgotten that this year, we hope you don’t!

Support us this 2nd Saturday and all year long so we can support you! Shop small, and shop at the 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐧

EAT THE ELITE 🐺✨

EAT THE ELITE takes on gatekeeping, cliques, exposure culture, and the unwritten rules that tell artists they’re not connected enough, established enough, wealthy enough, or simply enough.

Featuring new work by Tonya Van Parys, Coyote Little co-owner, curator, and multidisciplinary artist, alongside Australian artist and designer Jillian Shannon.

Van Parys confronts the art world head-on with dynamic color, bold symbolism, commercial imagery, and pointed text. Shannon answers with mixed-media embroidery, folk-art influences, and a distinctly sarcastic Australian point of view.

One bites. The other smirks.

Together, EAT THE ELITE asks:

What if the art world belonged to everyone?

“A Sin and a Lie” by artist Jillian Shannon for our October show examines the uneasy space between morality and authority. Religious imagery, a pointing hand, and an intricately stitched serpent collide in a landscape of judgment and temptation, questioning who gets to define what is righteous, what is forbidden, and what is true. Sometimes the rules we’re taught to obey deserve to be questioned.

*Pay and Pray*
Tonya Van Parys critiques consumerism and systemic exploitation through symbolism.

Twisting against a deep red halo inscribed “PAY TO PLAY – PAY AND PRAY,” linking hope and opportunity to money. Collaged words like “SPEND” and “GALLERIES” underscore economic pressure.

Blood drips from the paw; its severed foot hangs nearby as a “lucky” keychain, recasting good fortune as sacrifice. Luck, access, and survival come at a cost.
