Strangers will support your small business over people who actually know you.

Want to know why? Because people you know have a hard time accepting that you come from the same place, yet they’re in the same place. It comes down to your growth is a mirror that reflects their stagnation.

Your courage reminds them of their fears, and that stops them from supporting you. It’s not because they hate you (or maybe they do) but it’s because they’re uncomfortable with supporting you.

If you’re feeling this way as a small business owner, it’s okay. Remember that your path is not validated by those who root for you— it’s validated by being persistent and what you’re putting into your business. You keep showing up without the important people rooting for you, and that shows strength, courage, and determination.

Here is your reminder: instead of shopping big this year for the holidays, shop small. Purchase gift cards, buy a candle, purchase a hoodie, go out to your favorite local dinner place, see a play, support your local teams. By supporting small, you’re helping families supporting their own.
