Introducing CMA's 2026 Passport Program participants: Colin Perez and Jan Rybczynski

The Passport Program is a new addition to CMA's long term programming lineup in which two applicants are selected to spend a year in Johnstown. This 12 month intensive will cover the full extent of CMA's programs including Forging Focus, School is Cool, Architectural Aspirations, Octagon Collaborative Sculpture, one week and weekend sessions, and will cap off with the full six week CMA Winter Residency!

This intense program is designed for those interested in launching a career in metalworking with an emphasis on the most applicable avenues for employment.

Colin and Jan just finished up their last one-week workshop and are about to head into Forging Focus. Expect to see more of their journey and the work they make as they spend the next year with us in Johnstown!

This week we have Seth Gould in the shop sharing his knowledge on making pencil holding compasses and three-leaf dividers. This work requires a lot of very technical hand forging, including bookmatching, forgewelding, punching and drifting, all in preparation for some very fastidious benchwork. Yesterday there was even some swage making under the 400 Chambersburg!

Students in Leah Aripotch's, "Conjuring Creatures" workshop have completed their clay models and are now moving on to preparation of their metal components.
From here, it's going to be a combination of welding, grinding, and texturing to create a finished creature based on the clay model. Leah introduced a selection of angle grinding discs, die grinder burrs, and other cold working tools that will be used in a similar fashion to the clay sculpting implements students have been using to generate their creatures.

This week students are Conjuring Creatures with Leah Aripotch!

Students began this morning by making a wire armature that will be covered and sculpted with plastaline to get a strong sense of the forms they will later be making from ferrous material.

Sculpting a model from clay prior to embarking on making a design in a more permanent material can really enrich your design sensibilities.

Everyone is sure to get some really great insights regarding Leah's process as the week continues, looking forward to all the creatures scuttling around the shop!

Early bird tickets are now available for the 2026 Cambria Iron Conference. This is the one day of the year where blacksmiths, metalsmiths, sculptors, industrial enthusiasts, and community members get to share in the excitement of watching our restored industrial utility hammers forge a large scale sculpture.

In addition to the forging demonstrations in the Octagon, we will be hosting our third Iron Street Invitational in the CMA classroom, a team forging competition celebrating the dynamic nature of manipulating hot steel!

There will also have our annual from Core to Surface exhibition, showcasing ironwork from around the world in our gallery space here in Johnstown.

You can head over to our website to get your tickets while they're at a discount :)

We have Anna Koplik here this week breaking down utensil forging for a great group of students. This is a hand-forging focused class that puts a lot of emphasis on creating delicate and clean transitions between the various parts of a spoon, spatula, or fork. There's a lot of heatbreak when using a coal forge to create utensils this refined, the slightest missed hammer blow or overheating can ruin forgings that are this refined!
