Have you ever wondered what an orchestra librarian does?

An orchestra librarian does much more than keep track of sheet music. They prepare the individual parts for each musician, make sure every bowing, cut, correction, and marking is clearly noted, organize music for rehearsals and concerts, track scores and parts, coordinate rentals and returns, and help ensure that the conductor and musicians all have what they need when they walk into rehearsal.

Today, we are excited to highlight Taylor Boyle, the JSO’s Orchestra Librarian, as he enters his third year with the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra! His detailed and precise work helps keep the music moving from the first rehearsal to the final note on stage.

Taylor holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Bachelor of Music in Oboe Performance from Kent State University in Ohio. It is with this background that he began building expertise as an orchestra librarian, arranger, and music engraver.

In addition to his work at the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Taylor currently serves as the Ensemble Librarian and Events Coordinator at Carnegie Mellon University and as a substitute librarian for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He has also had the honor of collaborating with other great organizations such as the University of Rochester Orchestra, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Canton Symphony Orchestra, and The Cleveland Orchestra. When he is not working with digital and paper sheet music, he enjoys his ever-expanding plant collection and cuddling with his cats named after the Gone with the Wind characters Scarlett and Melly.

As you look through these photographs, take a moment to notice something you may not have seen before: the music on the stage! Whether supporting the full orchestra, a small ensemble, or a featured soloist, Taylor’s work is a vital part of bringing the music from the page to the stage.

Thank you, Taylor, for the care, organization, and dedication you bring to the JSO!

“Watching the audience cheer and rise to their feet at the end of Carmina Burana is a moment I will never forget.
