We still bestow the lifted hip award! This award is also meant to recognize those who consistently show up each day, ready to work hard, support others, and continually strive for improvement. At the end of the summer, we try to present it to a counselor who has gone above and beyond throughout the summer showing the students the meaning of Burklyn. Whoever receives it at the end of week six gets the honor of taking it home with them, which we hope will encourage them to return next summer.

Join us throughout the summer as we celebrate 50 years of our dance program by recognizing our dancers and staff. If you have ever received the lifted hip, please share your pictures with us.

WHY BURKLYN WEDNESDAY w/ Richie Romero

“The people and the atmosphere. You have so many different backgrounds of people and with that comes such a wealth of knowledge and insight in every single aspect of the dance world. You can learn all about the incredible work on stage like the dance, lights, scenery. You can learn about the tech and stage design and production. There’s literally so much to learn and every year you go back you find new depths of creativity and passion and find it in so many places.”

“I had the privilege of coming back as a master teacher. Burklyn and its staff saw me grow up, they saw my career flourish, and to come back as a master teacher meant the world to me. It is an acknowledgment that I will forever hold close to my heart. I love sharing that memory.”

It has been so special having Richie in our Burklyn family since 2012 as a student, counselor, and master teacher!

WHY BURKLYN WEDNESDAY w/ Karley Kintner

“To me, ‘the Burklyn family’ means knocking on each other’s doors at 7 am for a quick breakfast before morning warm-up. It’s stretching on the floor and giggling about what costume we’ll wear next Friday. It’s cheering from the wings when someone finally nails a choreography or an impossible pirouette sequence. The Burklyn family saves you a seat at every meal and asks how your sore Achilles is doing. They quickly change out of their costume right after performing just to catch your first Pas and send a video to your mom. They stay up late binge-watching Twilight because you’ve never seen it before. And even years later, they’re still there, supporting you in every win, big or small.”

“What makes Burklyn so special is the immediate sense of belonging. From the moment I was picked up from the airport, I felt a sense of warmth and hospitality from all of the Burklyn staff, and that feeling stayed with me throughout the entire six-week program. It wasn’t just the staff, but the dancers too. Everyone is so supportive, whether it’s in the studio pushing each other to improve, or outside of class just laughing and getting to know one another.”

It has been so special having Karley in our Burklyn family since 2022!
