Nine years ago this week, Friends of the Loew's co-presented the 2017 edition of the Golden Door International Film Festival at the Loew's JerseyTheatre. GDIFF began at the Loew's, and although the Festival had a variety of locals across Jersey City each year, the Theatre continued to be the Festival's showcase venue, where its biggest titles were screened and its awards show was staged every year until 2021, when FOL operations had to halt in preparation for the big renovation.

The festival helped make independent film a fun and exciting companion to FOL's signature classic film weekends.

Eva Marie Saint was born in Newark, and coincidentally became a star in a film that was famously shot on location not too far away in Hoboken: Saint starred opposite Marlon Brando in "On the Waterfront" and for it she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her first movie role. Five years later she starred in another career defining role, this time opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock's "North By Northwest". She graced the Loew's big screen in both of those films when FOL screened them. Did you see her here in them?

One of her later career roles was co-staring with Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason in 1986's "Nothing In Common". Her late career film work included roles in "Superman Returns" 2006, "Winter's Tale" 2014, and Mariette In Ecstasy" 2019. She also appeared in a variety of TV shows and several podcast series.

Film critic Leonard Maltin described her as a "luminous blond leading lady", and upon her death, the New York Times echoed that, describing her as a "luminous beauty with dramatic depth".

Eva Marie Saint was one of the last remaining stars of Hollywood's Golden Age, and it was always a small joy for fans to watch her movies and know she was still with us. Of course, now she is missed -- but fortunately for all of us, her grace and talent will always be with us on screen.

The new (old) marquee arrives at the Loew's.

As part of the restoration, a replacement marquee has been created based on the look of the 1929 original. The photos show the north side being hoisted into place.

Happy 97th Birthday, Loew's Jersey Theatre!

Did you know that's 40 more birthdays (and counting!) than it was supposed to have?

The landmark Movie Palace opened on September 28, 1929, and was, without a hint of exaggeration, called "the most lavish temple of entertainment in New Jersey." What made it extra special is that all that opulence was there to make everyone feel special, not just the rich and privileged.

The biggest stars of the 1930s & '40s appeared at the Loew's, including Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Jean Harlow and Humphrey Bogart. Some of the greatest movies of all time were shown on its screen, from "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone With the Wind" to "A Hard Day's Night" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom."

It's no surprise that the Loew's became a favorite part of life in Jersey City for decades.

But in 1986, it seemed that time had run out for the Theatre. It had been sold to a developer, closed, and scheduled to be torn down.

Friends of the Loew's didn't let that happen.

We waged a six-year campaign that finally stopped the wrecking ball. We mobilized an army of volunteers to repair years of neglect, begin historic restoration, make important improvements and save millions of dollars in the process.

Then we gave the Loew's back to the people it was built to welcome and entertain.

A new generation of stars and celebrities, along with local arts programs, community events, book signings, student shows, holiday events, major concerts … and, of course, some of the greatest classic movies and independent films are all part of the memories FOL has helped people make at the landmark Loew's in the last 40 years.

At the height of his career he started in many Spaghetti Westerns in the 70s.
As demand for this genre went down, he ended up becoming the face of Z-movies shot in Phillipines and Hong Kong, numerous collaborations with Godfrey Ho that despite being critically panned have gained a cult following over the years.

The news that the Loew's Jersey will be reopening after years of restoration is exciting! And with the new commercial management announcing shows starting in November, people keep asking: When does FOL's programming start again?

Our honest answer right now: We don't know.

Here's why. In 2020, the previous city administration announced that commercial management would run the Loew's after a massive, city-supported renovation was complete; a huge change for a theatre that was saved from demolition, restored, and operated for over 20 years by the community-based Friends of the Loew's.

But to reassure people, the City also promised that FOL would return after the renovation to keep on providing diverse and affordable programs as the non-profit side of the theater's operation.

The problem is that the details and agreements needed to make that really happen were never finalized.

So as things stand, FOL has no ability to present anything at the Loew's ... no concerts, local arts showcases, holiday events, school shows, community programming ... not even our classic and independent film screenings.

The good news: FOL is working with the Solomon administration to try to fix this.

We'll keep you updated!

In the meantime, please take our survey (link in comments) to tell us what you'd like to see most at the Loew's.

And if you don't already know the story, here's a little background about FOL and the Loew's: 40 years ago, official Jersey City redevelopment policy actually said the then-closed Theatre should be torn down. But FOL had a better idea: Reopen the Loew's as a special place that would bring people together, welcome them in its opulent architecture, and entertain and uplift them in the arts. And it would help revive Journal Square, too.

And FOL made it happen.

First, when city government couldn't find money to make all the repairs and upgrades needed to reopen the Loew's as an arts center, we used donated labor and supplies to get it done, saving millions in the process.

Then, FOL worked with arts and community groups, local promoters and other partners to provide programming. We created our classic film series. And we built a dedicated team of volunteers who kept costs down, made patrons feel at home, and provided a special energy and enthusiasm at every event.

Now the Loew's is starting a new chapter with major concerts from the new commercial management. FOL's mission hasn't changed: making sure there's always something for everyone to enjoy and afford at the Loew's.

On September 11, 2001, members of FOL were working in the Loew’s, still finishing up some of the repairs that would allow us to reopen the auditorium for stage productions and movie screenings that December.

Then the world changed. When the Twin Towers collapsed after being struck by the hijacked planes, stranded commuters began gathering helplessly outside the PATH station. An endless line of ambulances drove through the Square on their way to a staging area. One of us walked to the old Medical Center to give blood, but was told the hospital wasn’t set up to take it. In the streets, hundreds of people were streaming up from the waterfront - angry, scared and confused. Back at the Loew’s, we went up to the roof and stared in disbelief at the column of black smoke where the World Trade Center had been only a few hours before. Overhead, Air Force fighter jets circled with their weapon racks loaded.

It was frustrating to feel that there was nothing we could do. But then we thought that maybe the Loew’s marquee could at least help people feel not so alone in that awful moment. After putting up the message, we left the letterboard – but not the chase lights and flashing neon – on all night. Later, people who had struggled for hours with the tunnels and trains shut down to get back from New York, reached out to say how seeing the marquee made them feel – finally – at home, and safe. Others who saw the photo in "The Jersey Journal" also called to embrace the sentiment.

A few days later, FOL made the Loew’s a collection point for donations of supplies for rescue workers.
