Origin: Medieval castle, initially made of wood (IX century)

Purpose: Fortress, seat of the Counts of Flanders

Features: Impressive stone walls, moat, towers, and battlements

Historical significance:

- 14th century: Served as a court and prison
- 15th century: Converted into a courthouse and prison
- 19th century: Scheduled for demolition, but saved by Romanticists
- 20th century: Restored to its original medieval appearance

Today, Gravensteen is one of Belgium's most iconic landmarks and a popular tourist destination, offering stunning views of Ghent.
