Long before or , one of America's first drag superstars got his start in Boston. Julian Eltinge (1881-1941), from Newtonville, MA was an actor who played his first female role at the age of 10 in one of the Boston Cadet Reviews. (These were a series of musicals starring sons of prominent families in drag, to raise money for the Armory in the South End.) He went on to Broadway and then to Hollywood, playing both male and female roles. He also apparently played a role in legalizing drag in Los Angeles.

Plans for the Opt-Out Cap are now available on my website, free for use for whoever wants to make one. Costs about $30 in materials to put together.

The Opt-Out Cap blocks facial recognition when the panels are down, misdirecting facial recognition systems without flagging the user as having covered their face. The panels are made of mesh that the wearer can see through but not be seen through. It's also easily concealed when not in use by tucking the panels into the cap.

“Futility Island,” anonymous protest installation that appeared sometime in the past few days on McDermott Court on MIT campus. The title and use of PVC pipe reference the nearby, also recently-installed “Futurity Island” (see prior post). MIT is in the midst of several controversies involving accepting funding from sources that seem to undermine its own ethics. This spilling pipe emanates from I.M. Pei’s Green building, home of MIT’s Sept. of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, a relatively small MIT department that includes some of the world’s top publicly-funded climate researches as well as some labs and fellowships funded by the oil and gas industry. The building is named for a co-founder of GSI/Texas Instruments who made his fortune largely by selling Digital seismology tools to the oil industry. EAPS is raising funds to renovate the Green Building, and recently announced plans to accept a gift from Shell to renovate the building’s vintage lecture hall. Here are some pics of the piece as well as some lecture halls and some flyers spotted in the elevator.

Composer Igor Stravinsky as photographed by Boston Police in 1940. Though Stravinsky is best known for his work in Paris, he later moved to LA and became a US citizen, and spent time in Boston where he had a teaching position at Harvard. This is not actually a mug shot, it was taken for his citizenship application, but Stravinsky did have a run-in with BPD. In 1944, he was a guest conductor at Symphony Hall and performed his own arrangement of the national anthem. Word of the performance evoked angry and xenophobic letters to the Boston Globe. Officers were present at the second planned performance and informed Stravinsky that it is against MA state law to “alter” the national anthem. Stravinsky (who was not yet a citizen) agreed to skip it. The law they referenced was passed in 1917, is still on the books, and has never been tested in court. There has never been an “official” version of the anthem, so the question of whether Stravinsky’s version broke the law was subjective.

I hope you don’t get tired of seeing this piece as I’m going to post it every day until it sells. I’m kind of “dead in the water” at the moment as I desperately need some new brushes and I need to place an order for paint at Nova Color in LA. Completely out of mars black, Burnt Umber and Sienna. Kind of important colors. This is my only outlet at the moment to sell work. Until I can build up a small cash reserve I have to sell each painting as it is finished just to stay alive. Makes it extremely difficult to build up ten canvases for another exhibition. This painting is fun I think you need it on your wall. Especially if you are a fan of AI. Tat Tvam Asi
Finally back in a home and studio after 5 months. It’s good to be painting again.

I was working on this painting when my 17 year old daughter passed instantly in an auto accident 7 years ago. It was difficult to put myself back in that space to start working on the painting but here it is. Difficulties are put in front of us so that we might have the opportunity to overcome them and grow.
Let’s find a home for this piece as I’m anxious to get on to a large piece commissioned by which has something to do with pulling the bodhisattvas out of the game.
