Long before or , one of America's first drag superstars got his start in Boston. Julian Eltinge (1881-1941), from Newtonville, MA was an actor who played his first female role at the age of 10 in one of the Boston Cadet Reviews. (These were a series of musicals starring sons of prominent families in drag, to raise money for the Armory in the South End.) He went on to Broadway and then to Hollywood, playing both male and female roles. He also apparently played a role in legalizing drag in Los Angeles.
