The final weekend at Magnolia Loft begins today. Tonight a screening of Guy Maddin's Forbidden Room, followed by a late night performance by Molly Zenobia. Tomorrow the big Farewell Magnolia: Hub New Music, Audrey Harrer, Jeannie Greeley event, and Sunday, a final breath with The Last Embers: Magnolia Loft's Most Final Show Ever. Mention about the Magnolia Loft building's situation in The Boston Globe about artist displacement in the city.

"Last year, when a luxury residential developer had an agreement to buy an artists studio building on Brookside Avenue in Jamaica Plain for about $2 million, the tenants appealed to city officials, who told the would-be buyer they were not interested in changing the property’s light industrial zoning to make way for residences, said Brendan Killian, who’s had a studio there for five years.

That caused the developer to pull out of the deal. But the victory was short-lived. A few weeks later, Killian said, around Christmastime, the artists were sent eviction notices after the owner told them he’d gotten another offer for the three-story building."

Unlike residential renters who have some legal protections from aggressive eviction tactics, commercial tenants have few if any protections outside of private lease agreements.

Hi everyone, there is going to be a change in ownership to the building that Magnolia Loft is in. What this means is uncertain, but if it goes the way of most other buildings, it could likely get turned into condos... The building is currently zoned as light industrial, and if we can get the city to commit to keeping it zoned this way, it is much more likely we will be able to stay. The petition is below and the next event here is 11/9.
