One of the fastest ways to lose an audience is to perform like they’re not even there.

When you’re still building your fanbase, every performance is an interview. The people in front of you are deciding whether they want to follow you, stream your music, book you, or see you again.

That’s why eye contact matters.

Whether you’re performing for 500 people, 5 people, or just a camera

Look at people. Hold the connection. Bring them into the song.

Great performers don’t just perform in front of an audience.

They perform to them.

Are you using the whole stage during your performance—or spending the entire song stuck in the middle?

One of the easiest ways to make your live show feel bigger and create a stronger connection with your audience is learning how to intentionally cover the stage.

In this Live Edge performance tip, Michael Butler breaks down a simple A–B–C–D–E Stage Mapping System inspired by the way marching bands use coordinates—or “dots”—to know exactly where they need to be during the music.

You’ll learn how to:
• Divide your stage into five performance zones
• Map different parts of your song to specific stage positions
• Reach the audience on both sides of the room
• Make your stage movement look intentional instead of random
• Rehearse movement without making your performance feel robotic
• Identify whether you’re falling into the “center-stage trap”

Your movement shouldn’t just fill space. It should help tell the story of the song and create moments with the audience.

THE LIVE EDGE CHALLENGE
Record yourself performing one full song from a wide camera angle.

Watch it back and ask yourself:
If I created a heat map of my performance, would most of it be sitting right in the middle of the stage?
If the answer is yes, it’s time to map your show.

A. B. C. D. E.
Stop performing to the middle of the room.

Start performing to the whole room.

At Live Edge, we call this technique “Good Face.”

In this video, Michael Butler breaks down how facial expressions can help an artist connect with an audience, express the meaning of a song and look more comfortable onstage.

You will also learn a three-step rehearsal exercise designed to develop more natural and believable expressions.

The Good Face Exercise:
Perform the song using only your eyes.

Perform it again using your entire face.

Add your body and allow your facial expression to lead your movement.

Record each pass and watch the performance back without sound. Can you still understand the emotion and personality of the song? If not, it is time to work on your Good Face.

A powerful performance does not begin with choreography. It begins with a thought—and the audience usually sees that thought on your face first.
