SOUTHLIGHT GALLERY

The Southlight Gallery is a collaboration of 25 local artists. It is a member of Downtown Jacksonville’s Off The Grid program which was established by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville and Downtown Vision, Inc., in an effort to enliven the district by offering affordable vacancies to area artists. Southlight’s primary goal is to present a diverse selection of work from both established and emerging local fine artists through our on-going exhibitions. Southlight’s monthly public openings have become a favorite among the Downtown ArtWalk circuit. Southlight is made possible by the sharing of expenses among members and serves as a means for each artist to represent themselves. Funds from all sales are paid in full to member artists. Southlight does not participate in commissions. The gallery, staffed entirely by volunteers, is open to the public weekly, Tuesdays through Fridays, from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm, or by appointment. We accept cash or check only.

In honor of David Hockney (1938 - 2026), this display of my 1975 photoshoot chronicles part of an art adventure to meet several well-known artists, which was organized by Robert Miller (NYC) for a select few. As luck would have it, I was at 23, on the plane to France— my first trip across the Atlantic— Hasselblad camera in tow.
Chief among the artists we met was David Hockney. He was very kind and a great storyteller and the time he spent with our group was memorable. The proofs of my spontaneous photo shoot, filmed in his apartment in Paris, had been lost for a long while, and it’s a joyous discovery to share them now with the community.
David Hockney, an icon, was a great influence on many in the art world and beyond. I found him to be a remarkably kind, witty & unassuming man- not what one would expect of an art world superstar. From one of his stories, I gleaned his prevailing motivation in creating. When asked by a technician why he focused on a particular subject matter he replied,
“Pleasure, pure pleasure!”

Another Art Walk for the books!
The rain cleared and we were graced with three generations of photographers in one room! A big thank-you to our guest artist, Hillary McCullough, for an amazing show. Having her mentor, Paul Karabinis, and her students together in one room was truly special. In case you missed us, we are open Tuesday thru Friday from 11Am to 3Pm!
