You don’t know how to raise a Black daughter.

I heard people say things like that when I was five. I was scared and holding my new mom’s hand in the foster office. She didn’t look unsure at all. She just squeezed my hand and said, “We’re going home.” That was the first moment I felt safe.

Growing up, my mom learned everything for me. She asked questions about my hair and my skin. She watched videos, talked to friends, and made sure I never felt out of place. Some neighbors stared. Some whispered. My mom kept walking, kept working, kept loving.

School wasn’t always easy. People judged us because we didn’t match. But my mom came to every meeting and every bus stop. She told me, “You can be anything,” and she acted like it was true long before I believed it.

The day I became a cop, she cried first. I wore the badge. She held the pride. ❤️ 📸
