Last week we hosted workshops and conversations with students, healers, teachers, and artists. These conversations and opportunities for creative reflection leave their mark on what we do and who we are. It is reciprocal, indeed.

This interview with Rachel Brown, Sheila Goloborotko, and Hope, by the brilliant community treasure that is Anne Schindler, is super special. Their combined voices give a glimpse into the intentions behind the Reciprocal Exhibition currently on view here at Yellow House. It goes deep as it explores themes of truth, care, curiosity, liberation and - of course - reciprocity.

Too wild! Duval County School Board voted to ban the graphic novel version of 1984 tonight. During Banned Books Week. 1984 - the dystopian (not so much) novel about living under totalitarianism and the ever-present big brother. Censorship, and more. You. Can’t. Make. This. Up.

Come hang out with us today 12-7pm. We’ve got plenty of banned books to read to one another.

Freedom to write, create, read, and BE was in full effect with families from The Bloom Lab and so many visitors today. For everyone who made a journal, took in the exhibition, printed a bit of letterpress, fed our neighbors, typed, wrote, and spoke your truth - Thank you!

Join us for extended hours tomorrow as we focus on FREEDOM! In some ways it is like any other day, but we will activate the print studio to make prints, journals and bookmarks with images and messages of dissent and hope. There are banned books to share snd a powerful exhibition to breathe in. And we’ll make sure everyone is registered to vote.

Fall of Freedom is an urgent call to the arts community to unite in defiance of authoritarian forces sweeping the nation. Our Democracy is under attack. Threats to free expression are rising (don’t we know it!). Dissent is being criminalized. Institutions, and media have been recast as mouthpieces of propaganda. Art is being targeted AND it is part of the solution.

Upholding free expression, creating a just space for people to find each other, speaking truth to power, and pushing back against fascist forces have been core to our mission since our founding nine years ago. And this weekend we join with thousands of artists across the country in acts of creative courage.

Our freedoms to speak, to question, to create, to love, and to live without fear are not privileges. They are rights, earned, defended, and carried forward by all of us. When we forget them, they fade. When we remember them, they rise again.

So come on through 11am-4pm. The event is free, but we welcome offerings. or our mutual aid efforts. Because, you know, resistance also means taking care of one another. 💛💚

Turning on the lights to open for the day has us pausing with a quote curated into the current exhibition - one of several hovering high on the walls, over doors and windows. By the great Myles Horton, founder of Highlander Center, these words articulate our own thoughts on education.

We are back in the House today, but still riding high from the sweetness of Evidence of Life this past Saturday. Neighbors, artists, families, curiosity seekers, educators, care givers, and strangers-now-friends gathered in the lovely, often-neglected, historically important Main Street Park to create, learn, and linger.

Guided by our own Rion and Elai - and a mighty team of helpers - a beautifully diverse community of folks experienced printmaking, poetry, story telling, and mutual aid. Mostly, we loved on each other - a lot! It was life giving.

Thanks to Tim Gilmore, whose Teach-In was 🔥! And hearing His Royal Flyness give voice to the writings of James Weldon Johnson and Zora was SO good. There was such truth and power in all the words spoken into the mic at the center of the circle.

And deep bows of gratitude to our friends at Jax Mutual Aid Collective, who made sure all who entered the park left with sustenance and gestures of care. Y’all are the best of us!

The final EOL gathering is October 10, where we will do more of this AND reveal ALL the art created over the past few months. Thanks for the support PlacemakingJax Presented by VyStar Credit Union as we honor the people, places, past and purpose that are evidence of life.
