It was a beautiful and šŸ”„ Saturday printmaking, poetry, learning, sharing, and community care during the Evidence of Life experience in Main Street Park.

Big love to our own Elai and Rion for their vision and hard work. Deep gratitude for the Teach In leaders Niveah Glover and Yollie Copeland with Explore JAX Core Tours - your words and wisdom brought a better understanding of this pocket of the city. And Jax Mutual Aid Collective took good care of all of us - with bags of food, harm reduction items, hygiene kits, and popsicles. And every volunteer - you were amazing!

Thanks to PlacemakingJax presented by VyStar Credit Union for supporting this purposeful project. We can’t wait to attend the next one! Mark your calendars for August 8!

We hope you can make this night of poetry, truth telling, art and community part of your week. Nancy Meyer weaves stories of her ancestors and the harm they perpetrated with the narrative of her own dynamic existence. When we seek stories of reckoning and solidarity - especially through art - healing is possible and we get closer to creating a more just future.

The program is free and will include Nancy - all the way from San Francisco - reading from her book ā€˜The Stoop and the Steeple’ and entering dialogue with all of us. It’ll be a perfect time to see our current exhibition ā€˜Silence Unraveled’’.

We are open today 12-7pm. We would love to see you - whether you are looking for respite, inspiration, space to create, or an opportunity to be held by community, we've got you.

The words and art in the current exhibition 'Silence Unraveled' make a lovely vessel for any or all of that, including several powerful watercolors by artist Teresa Cook, pictured here. Just the works in this corner of our space - by Marsha Hatcher, Violet Lester, Bobbie O'Connor, and Teresa - will feed your soul.

This is going to be a powerful evening of poetry, truth telling, and community. The event is free, but you will need to register for a seat. We are an intimate (aka small) space, y'all. Let's give a loving Yellow House welcome to our friend from San Fran as she adds new layers of meaning to our current exhibition 'Silence Unraveled'.

Join us Thursday, June 18 from 6-8pm for an evening of readings and dialogue with poet and activist Nancy Meyer.

Join us for the Opening Night this Saturday!!!

šŸ’›šŸ’›šŸ’›

Across place and time it has too often been spoken: ā€œKeep quiet. Be seen not heard. Whatever you have to say is not worth the space it takes up.ā€

ā€˜Silence Unraveled’ serves as an antidote, giving expression to the truth of trauma, the power of voice, and the importance of human connection.

This exhibition amplifies stories of inheritance: what we receive from the women who came before us, what we choose to keep, and what we finally set down. Paintings, prints, drawings, textiles, poems and songs stitch together experiences that are personal and political, tender and furious, vulnerable and resolute. It is a catharsis of truth-telling that is connected to history and very much of this moment.

The art works in this exhibition wrap around the words of Jacksonville playwright and performer Bobbie O’Connor, who recently premiered her one-woman performance entitled the same. It is a story that traces four generations of women in her family and the misogyny that shaped each of their lives across more than 150 years.

It is an honor to lift up this group of artists as they break through the silence, link arms across generations, and take up space that is rightly theirs. We see them in their individual fullness while also feeling the collective ties that bind us to one another.
And as always, there is room for your voice, too, as we co-create ways to resist, love, and heal, together. Visitors are invited to literally add words to the exhibition and participate in programs throughout the summer, including art workshops, story sharing events, artist talks, and more.

Participating Artists:
Maevis Blythe | Teresa Cook | Deja Gee | Kira Graham | Hope McMath | Marsha Glazier | Lauren Fincham | Marsha Hatcher | Erin Kendrick | Violet Lester | Ripley Selhorst | Priscilla Smith | Sharla Valeski | Bobbie O’Connor

Special gratitude to Barbara Colaciello, BABS’ LAB, and Bobbie O’Connor for bringing Silence Unraveled to life and inviting all of us to explore the ways we have been silenced and possibly, played a role in silencing others.
