Feeling honored to receive a Juror’s Choice Award for my Lahaina Banyan Tree at the Art Center Coop “Pack Your Bags” reception last night at the Jacksonville Public Library! One year ago today was the devastating fire in Lahaina, Maui where the real Lahaina Banyan tree was severely damaged. Super stoked that 2 of my sculptures qualified for the TAC “Pack Your Bags” exhibition at the downtown Jacksonville Public Library Art Gallery. My “Lahaina Banyan Tree” & “Boabab Tree” are on display along with works from many other talented local artists on the 1st floor. If you’re in the area check out the exhibit! At least it’s in the AC😎

Finally! My meager attempt to create a representation of the iconic “Lahaina Banyan Tree”, which in real life is almost an acre in size. The real tree is having new growth every day which is truly a miracle after the devastating fire in Maui. This sculpture is the largest I’ve ever attempted (26”w x 18”h x 18”d). It took 5 lbs of clay, 80+ft of 10,12 & 14 gauge wire, 2 lg cans of spray adhesive, a lg purchased box of real seafoam tree pieces, a lg bag of green flocking, more glue, lots of acrylic paint & over 100 hrs of hands-on work. It’s truly a work of art from my heart ❤️

What to do when the “feel like” temp outside is 106 degrees? Stay inside & play w clay! I had already constructed the wire armature so today was clay day, the most time-consuming part. This was 4 hrs worth & I’m not even halfway through applying the clay! If all goes well, in a few weeks it will be my interpretation of the ‘Lahaina Banyan Tree’. If not, it will be a Florida cactus🤪

Just finished sculpting my version of an African “Boabab” Tree. With bark & fruit offering over 300 life-sustaining uses, the ‘Tree of Life’ is the root of many Indigenous remedies, traditions, & folklore. This prehistoric species is over 200 million yrs old & carbon dating indicates they may live up to 3,000 years. They can reach up to 100 feet tall with a huge girth, vary greatly in appearance & can be found in many places of the world. Very cool tree!

It’s going to be awesome weather for the Mandarin Arts Festival this weekend! 100+ artists, vendors & more! I am in booth #43 & this year will be selling sun-catchers in addition to my trees. I have 2”, 4” & 5” wire tree sun-catchers with gemstones & 6-8” dragonfly sun-catchers with crystal beads. Stop by & visit for bright & colorful!

Making final preparations for the Mandarin Arts Festival Arts Festival being held this weekend. I love how this tree turned out, using the Jacaranda tree as my inspiration♥ It is made with wire, clay, acrylics, natural tree pieces & lavender colored "flocking". I attached it to a piece of purple orchid tree from our backyard & encircled it with polished amethyst stones.
