Wondering what to look for when choosing a DJ for your wedding? Read this!
Choosing a DJ for your wedding is one of the most important decisions you'll make during the wedding planning process. Your DJ sets the pace and vibe for the entire night.
Here are some tips, inside information, and important questions to ask to ensure that you find the perfect DJ for YOUR special day!
No two weddings should look alike - just like no two couples are just alike. Leave the cookie cutters to the baker and make sure your wedding DJ is prepared to:
- Play (or not play) certain types, styles, or genres of music. This one seems pretty obvious, but make sure they have a special playlist just for your event that fits your taste. If there are specific songs you want played, be sure to let them know!
- Create the appropriate mood or ambiance for your ceremony and reception. A good DJ will be able to do this not only with certain music at certain times, but with special lighting techniques as well.
- Provide sound for the ceremony and/or reception. If using the DJ for both the ceremony and reception, and they are in different locations, they should be able to have both areas set up simultaneously for a seamless transition for you and your guests.
- Provide a microphone for the pastor/officiant (or anyone else) if needed. (Karaoke, anyone?)
- Provide an adequate setup (plenty of speakers, along with strategic placement - this takes experience and a thorough knowledge of how sound distribution works). Also, depending on the number of guests you will have and the type of venue you will be in, special provisions should be taken (especially for large rooms or outdoor venues), to properly fill the space and account for the absorbtion that is going to take place. This is extremely important to the quality of sound.
- Set up music, sound and lighting outdoors and/or generate their own power when needed.
- Organize and carry out traditional or unique ceremonial customs, games, or other festivities. (Bouquet and garter toss, bride & groom dance, etc.)
Obviously budget will also play a part in which DJ you choose, as will personality - whether or not you and the DJ "mesh". It's important that you are 100% confident with your wedding DJ, their ability to guide you through the entire process (they ARE the professionals, right?) and deliver exactly what YOU want to make your big day a success. When weighing your wedding "must have's" and the "would like to have's", your DJ is one thing that you want to do right!
