Jazz, culture, and community filled The Ritz as we kicked off our Juneteenth celebrations with the opening reception of Shutter & Sound: A Jazz Exhibition.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an evening honoring the enduring influence of jazz and the stories that continue to inspire us.

If you missed the opening, there’s still time to experience the exhibition now through August 11.

Happy Juneteenth! Here in Florida, Emancipation Day is celebrated on May 20th, to honor the day General Edward M. McCook read the Emancipation Proclamation and raised the American flag at the Capitol in Tallahassee. However, this historic news traveled slowly, taking nearly a month longer to reach the remote areas of Texas. Union soldiers finally arrived in Galveston on June 19th, 1865, bringing word that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved individuals were free. Today, this vital milestone is a federal holiday and is recognized and celebrated across the nation.

Black Music Month continues and the incomparable Duke Ellington shares a long, storied history with Jacksonville! In the early days, while traveling the Chitlin’ Circuit, the Astor Motel in Sugar Hill was a popular spot for Ellington and his band to get some much-needed rest. Many years later, he was commissioned by the city to compose an original piece of music to commemorate Jacksonville’s 150th anniversary. “Celebration”, which he described as a love letter to Jacksonville, was first performed by the Jacksonville Symphony in 1972.

Catch Bob Willoughby's photograph of Duke in our current exhibition of Shutter & Sound at the Ritz Museum!

Black Music Month continues! The legendary Louis Armstrong has a strong connection to Jacksonville! The city was a regular stop for him from his earliest days on the road, performing at popular local venues like the Strand Theatre and the Two Spot. Later in his career, when he was embraced by both white and Black audiences, he was able to expand his footprint throughout the city, including Jax Beach. You can see Bob Willoughby's photographs of Louis Armstrong in our current Exhibition of Shutter & Sound at the Ritz Museum!

Black Music Month is here! This June 18, our next museum exhibition, Shutter and Sound, will highlight the incredible legacy of Jazz through the lens of renowned photographer Bob Willoughby. Several Black musicians who have ties to Jacksonville will be featured in the exhibition, including trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, who performed at the very first Jacksonville Jazz Festival in 1980, back when it was known as the Mayport and All That Jazz Festival.
