Au Cœur du Silence
By Jeannie Chapman

There is a moment in the natural world that often goes unseen, not because it is hidden, but because it is quiet.
Au Cœur du Silence was born from that kind of moment.
In the dense hush of a forest, two great egrets stand over their nest, not in spectacle, but in stillness. Their wings open not in flight, but in shelter. Their bodies mirror one another, curved inward, forming a space that feels both intimate and infinite. What happens here is not dramatic. It is not loud. It is not urgent.
It is presence.
This painting explores the sacredness of connection that exists without performance. The space between the birds, the narrow breath where their beaks nearly meet, became the emotional center of the work. It is a place of trust, of attention, of mutual awareness. A place where nothing needs to be said.
In creating this piece, I was drawn to the tension between strength and tenderness. The wings, expansive and powerful, create a protective canopy. Beneath them, the nest woven, imperfect, grounded, holds the quiet labor of building something that will endure. Together, they suggest a kind of love that is not defined by display, but by devotion.
The background was intentionally softened into layers of green and shadow, evoking the feeling of being held within something larger. Light filters in gently, never demanding attention, but offering just enough to reveal what matters. The world recedes, and what remains is this singular exchange, this shared stillness.
As both an artist and a leader working in spaces of care, I am continually drawn to moments where presence carries more weight than words. In hospitals, in grief, in love, there are encounters that cannot be solved or spoken into clarity. They can only be witnessed.
This painting is an offering of that kind of witnessing.
Au Cœur du Silence invites the viewer to pause. To notice what emerges when nothing is forced. To consider the ways we hold and are held not through grand gestures, but through quiet, enduring attention.
At the heart of silence, something essential reveals itself.
And it is enough.
