story time ✨
on how & why I will never compromise safety 🔥
A few days ago, I was unexpectedly removed from a group chat of local fire dancers who were volunteering to donate a performance to a wellness festival.
It took me a moment to understand why.
The reason was simple: I asked,
“Will we be covered under the organizer’s insurance, or do they need a copy of ours?”
It’s one of the first — and most important — questions to ask for any specialty performance.
I later learned that “every dancer is on their own,” meaning insurance wasn’t being coordinated and some performers were planning to participate uninsured.
While I respect that everyone runs their business differently, I personally can’t approach fire performance that way.
Safety isn’t an afterthought in this work — it’s the foundation. Not just for performers, but for event hosts and guests as well.
— So yes, sometimes that means losing opportunities —
And no, it won’t be the last time.
Because as performers, we’re constantly making decisions that go far beyond costuming, rehearsal hours, or pricing. We’re making decisions that directly impact the safety and liability of everyone involved.
That responsibility matters — even for donated or volunteer performances.
Flirting with Flames provides proof of specialty insurance for every single event and does not perform alongside uninsured performers. 🔥
Professional. Prepared. Proud of it.
