A Sherlockian Event Worth Knowing About: The Vincent Starrett Conference

If the name Vincent Starrett is unfamiliar to you, you are certainly not alone ~ and we at Baker Street West would like to remedy that!
Vincent Starrett (1886–1974) was a Chicago journalist, author, bibliophile, mystery writer, and one of the great early American Sherlockians. He was a founding member of the Baker Street Irregulars and one of the people who helped shape the Sherlockian world we know today.
His most famous Sherlockian work, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, published in 1933, became a foundational work of Sherlock Holmes scholarship and helped inspire generations of readers, writers, and Sherlockian societies. Starrett was also a lifelong lover of books and spent more than two decades writing about them for the Chicago Tribune. It is for good reason that he became known as "the last bookman."
He also founded Chicago's Hounds of the Baskerville, a Sherlockian society that continues today.
And now, on the 140th anniversary of his birth, a very special three-day celebration of Vincent Starrett's life and work is being held in Illinois:

Summer with Sherlock at Baker Street West!

It's been a lively and rewarding summer at Baker Street West as our young actors have stepped into the gaslit world of Sherlock Holmes, the world's most famous consulting detective. Together, they have learned the art of stagecraft, built confidence, and immersed themselves in Victorian London, where mystery, deduction, and adventure await around every corner.
Now, after weeks of rehearsals and hard work, they are ready to present their own theatrical adaptation of one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most beloved adventures:
Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Red-Headed League . . . Explained!
Join us as these talented young performers bring Holmes, Watson, and an unforgettable cast of characters to life with imagination, humor, and heart.

Sunday, August 23 at 1 o'clock pm

When Baker Street West first began, we dreamed that others might someday believe in it. We never imagined they would believe in it enough to create something so beautiful, as Kellsey has, on its behalf. Thank you, Kellsey! We love you!! 💗💗💗

This autumn, yours truly will be hosting a one-woman Broadway dinner as a benefit for a theater company very close to my heart.

As many know, Baker Street West was forced out of their original location in Main Street Jackson 2 1/2 years ago, but are rising from the ashes at their new location at the old Amador Court House just up the hill. Since then, they have been able to perform more shows with their very own grand stage, but they need all the help they can get to fully recreate their vision.

This organization welcomed me with open arms by allowing me to perform in their space over the years, and in a couple years time, will be the venue for my wedding. Because of their love and support, as well as their vision to bring the world of Sherlock Holmes to our county, I want to express my deepest gratitude.

The Broadway Bistro Italiano is one of those events that - I hope - will be one step closer to achieving BSW’s goal.

Open auditions for “Sherlock Holmes vs Dracula,” Saturday, July 25, 2026, 2 pm – 5 pm at Baker Street West, Jackson. Roles available for ages 18 and up. Performances will be held weekends, September 18 - October 11, 2026.

“Sherlock Holmes vs Dracula,” written and directed by John Lee: The Great Detective meets the Prince of Darkness in this action-packed, musical stage adventure! Mystery, Thrills, Chills, exciting sword play and four original songs!

· Be prepared to present a short monologue of your choosing, preferably using an English accent.

Baker Street West is delighted to announce that we have been awarded a $500 grant in support of our Youth Summer Program through the Jackson Rancheria Employee Community Grant Fund in partnership with the Amador Community Foundation.

This project was made possible by a grant from the Amador Community Foundation through the Jackson Rancheria Employee Community Grant Fund.

We are deeply grateful for this support as we continue expanding youth theatre opportunities through our upcoming Summer with Sherlock program at Baker Street West’s new home inside the Historic Courthouse in Jackson.

This summer program will give students the opportunity to explore theatre arts, acting techniques, creativity, teamwork, and the world of Sherlock Holmes while participating in the production of Sherlock Holmes: The Adventure of the Red-Headed League . . . Explained, written by Baker Street West Artistic Director Beth Barnard.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the Amador Community Foundation and to the employees of Jackson Rancheria whose generosity helps support youth, families, arts, and community programs throughout Amador County.
