Another fun weekend of DJ’ing, and I’ve got a few more events lined up.

I’m always paying attention to who’s singing along, who’s moving to the music, and what genres seem to connect the most. If the crowd is a mix of younger and older, I’m looking for those classic and modern songs that can appeal to everyone. Sometimes I’ll even take a chance on something a little more obscure—a forgotten hit—to see if it still connects. If something doesn’t hit, I’ll transition to something else. I’m constantly reading the room and doing my best to give each crowd my all.

Sometimes I’m told exactly what they like beforehand, and other times I’m told, “We like everything—just go with it.” I enjoy both, because it gives me a chance to either work within what they already know they love or take some chances and see what connects with the crowd.

It’s a thrill, it’s a challenge, but it’s so worth it when I hear things like, “Your entire playlist is immaculate.” (Which might be my favorite compliment yet) There’s really no feeling quite like knowing people are enjoying the music i’m choosing.

No matter how many events I DJ, I still get a little nervous. Not because I don’t think I can do it—but because I genuinely want to give every event my best. Once the dance floor opens, the real work begins. The crowd tells you what they want, and I’m constantly thinking, “What’s the next song that’ll keep this going?” Sometimes that means letting a song play because everyone’s singing along. Other times it means mixing into the next song before the energy fades.

For example, if “Cupid Shuffle” ends and I’m going into “24K Magic,” I’m not letting everyone stand there through that 20 second electronic voice intro. I’ll watch the waveforms on my DJ software and jump straight to the beat drop, or blend songs together to keep the momentum going. If someone requests “Yellow” by Coldplay while everyone’s dancing, I’ll gladly play it—just when the momentum has slowed down. Reading the room is just as important as knowing the music.

It’s a little nerve-racking at times, but when you get in that groove where every song seems to land and people are having a great time, there’s really nothing else like it. I’m grateful for every opportunity I’ve had to do this.
