Josh Dolan: “Broken Guitars”
Artist and musician Josh Dolan brings together his love of music, visual storytelling, and a constant need to cut pictures out of magazines in his ever-evolving body of work, Broken Guitars.
Using found and discarded guitars as his canvas, Dolan transforms instruments that might otherwise be forgotten into intricate mixed-media works layered with imagery, history, humor, and imagination. Through collage and assemblage, each guitar becomes something entirely new: part sculpture, part cultural artifact, and part visual narrative.
Recurring themes of environmental consciousness and American history run throughout the series. Images pulled from magazines and other printed materials collide and overlap across the surfaces of the instruments, creating unexpected relationships between nature, popular culture, music, politics, nostalgia, and the American experience. The resulting works feel both familiar and fantastical, inviting viewers to look closer and discover new details, references, and connections within every piece.
At the heart of Broken Guitars is the idea of transformation. Objects created to make music are given another life as visual art, while discarded materials are reimagined rather than thrown away. Dolan’s work reflects the same creative energy that drives his music: instinctive, layered, playful, and constantly evolving.
Join Josh Dolan for the Ithaca Gallery Night opening of Broken Guitars on Friday, September 4, at Room K at K-HOUSE Karaoke & Arts Hub. The evening brings Dolan’s visual and musical worlds together, with a live performance by Josh and his band, The 86ers, alongside the exhibition.
