One of the things we're really proud of at K-HOUSE is having professional graphic designers on our team! One of them also happens to be a family member, so creativity and the arts have always been a big part of our extended K-HOUSE family.
He's a professional graphic designer and art director who majored in Commercial Graphic Design and Typography and graduated first in his class from the Art Institute of Philadelphia. He has held several art director positions throughout his professional career and continues to do commercial graphic design for prominent NYC tourism companies, creating everything from billboards, bus wraps, and brochures to the less glamorous but equally important work of designing detailed bus schedules!
Locally, his work has been circulating throughout Ithaca since 2014, when we first opened our K-HOUSE Karaoke Lounge & Suites location in Lansing. All of our original in-house designs, including our signage, menus, logos, and other branded materials, were created by him under Get Designs Here. From T-shirt designs, logos, festival and event flyers, and promotional materials to album artwork for local musicians, chances are you've come across something he's designed over the years without even realizing it!
This summer, we also had the opportunity to feature his original artwork as part of Ithaca Gallery Night, showcasing another side of his creativity beyond commercial design.
As K-HOUSE continues to evolve into a community arts hub, we're excited to create even more opportunities to showcase local talent, encourage artistic collaboration, and bring together visual art, music, performance, and community.
Interestingly, some of his original artwork has actually been mistaken for AI-generated imagery, which is both ironic and a little frustrating considering his decades of professional experience and formal training. Part of the reason may be that AI image generators have been trained on enormous amounts of existing artwork and graphic design, including the same artistic principles, techniques, composition, color theory, and visual styles that have been taught in design schools for generations. In other words, AI is learning to imitate the work of human artists and designers, not the other way around. It's unfortunate that we're reaching a point where professionally executed artwork can be mistaken for AI simply because it shares some of those visual characteristics. That's also why I think it's important to recognize and appreciate the skill, education, experience, and creative decisions that go into original human-made design.
At K-HOUSE, we do not intentionally use AI-generated imagery for our own in-house designs, and we continue to encourage the many artists, musicians, DJs, and event promoters we work with to explore more original and creative approaches to marketing their events. We offer our professional design services, but we also help guide people through the creative process, whether that means sharing design tips, suggesting DIY approaches, encouraging hand-drawn artwork, or even embracing the growing trend of simple, handwritten flyers made with Sharpies and paper! Not everything needs to be polished or professionally designed to be effective. Sometimes the most authentic and memorable promotional materials are the ones that feel the most personal. We are particularly quick to point out our punk band flyers that really represent the DIY/anti-AI movement so well with their creative approaches to promotional artwork.
With so many different artists and organizers creating their own promotional materials for events at our venue, we recognize that we haven't caught everything that may have slipped through the cracks. We're human, we're a small business, and we're doing our best to balance creative freedom with our commitment to supporting original artwork. We're always learning and improving, and we genuinely appreciate the conversations surrounding AI and the value of human creativity. Ultimately, our goal isn't just to promote events. It's to help foster a creative community where artists support one another, share their skills, and have opportunities to thrive.
