Not everyone sees the same cat
------
This painting is currently hanging at Third Culture Coffee in Bellevue.

Over the next weeks, while people can still physically encounter it there, I'm inviting a few writers to spend some time with the image and respond to it through short fiction, essays, and perhaps even poetry.

I have always been fascinated by how different people can see entirely different things in the same story. Perhaps this is simply the reverse experiment: how a single image can contain several emotional realities at once. Some people see the woman first. Others notice the cat. Someone else stays with the red moon, or the lamp, or the silence between the two figures. One person sees solitude. Another sees danger. Another sees tenderness. Memory. Superstition. Waiting. Childhood. Disappearance. Or simply a woman standing under a red moon holding a black cat, without needing the image to become anything more than that.

I do not know yet exactly what this will become. Maybe a small literary experiment. Maybe only a temporary conversation around a painting. But part of the point is to let it evolve before deciding what it is.

I’ll be there on May 9th and would love to see you there for a chat. But if May 9th does not work, the paintings will stay there throughout the month, so you can always stop by another time for a coffee and wander around a little.

There is a story behind this painting about a girl who believed in magic.
Not the magic of tricks and fairy tales, but the kind children build their world upon when they believe that trees listen, wind whispers back, and the people they love tell the truth.

Undeva in România.

Copilo, pune-ți mânile pe genunchii mei.
Eu cred că veșnicia s-a născut la sat.
Aici orice gând e mai încet,
și inima-ți zvâcnește mai rar,
ca și cm nu ți-ar bate în piept,
ci adânc în pământ undeva.
Aici se vindecă setea de mântuire
și dacă ți-ai sângerat picioarele
te așezi pe un podmol de lut.

Uite, e seară.
Sufletul satului fâlfâie pe lângă noi,
ca un miros sfios de iarbă tăiată,
ca o cădere de fum din streșini de paie,
ca un joc de iezi pe morminte înalte.
