The MCC is pleased to announce the appointment of Marina Habib as Program Coordinator. Please see below an introduction from Marina!
Hello, my name is Marina Habib (she/her), and I am beyond excited to be the new Program Coordinator for the UCSB MultiCultural Center. As a recent UCSB graduate with a degree in Communication and Sociology, I am deeply honored to return to the MCC, a space that has profoundly influenced my journey in activism, social justice, and overall personal growth. It is a privilege to contribute to and build upon the impactful work established long before my arrival.
In my role, I develop and oversee programs for our quarterly calendar – balancing the need to address social justice topics with opportunities for joy and creative expression.

Central to my approach is a belief in the transformative power of love and embracing the collective. As Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” This quote deeply resonates with me and fuels my commitment to fostering compassion and kindness in all that I do. I am passionate about building inclusive spaces that honor diverse narratives — promoting cultural awareness, sensitivity, and appreciation. My focus is on advancing social justice work that transcends mere activism, aiming to foster high-caliber conversations and create safe spaces that uplift students, particularly those within the margins of marginalized communities.

Cheers to building a more inclusive and compassionate campus community, where we all shine our light onto one another and grow together. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any collaboration ideas or initiates, I look forward to seeing you at ALL of our events!

Fun Fact: I love to explore various art mediums, especially painting, and I enjoy engaging in diverse forms of content creation.

With gratitude,

Marina Habib

Come join the MCC Council as we kick off the new year at our annual Fall Town Hall on Tuesday, October 8th, at 5:30pm in the MCC Lounge; check-in will begin at 5pm. Attendance is mandatory for registration as a 2019-2020 MCC User Group. Please RSVP at the following link: https://forms.gle/T2KNJaiyTxySin69A

As we continue advocating for social justice efforts for marginalized communities across campus, learn more about how your User Group can be active in these efforts. We will pick up where we left off and release our Campus Inclusion Letter as part of a larger effort and initiative to ensure that our communities thrive at UCSB. Last year, we engaged in critical conversations addressing the issues that have been threatening marginalized communities on and off the UCSB campus. This year, we invite you to work with us in proactively tackling these issues with action— our first, which will be the release of our letter.

Light refreshments will be served. Due to limited space, we are inviting a maximum of 2 representatives per User Group to attend.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Vote YES for the MultiCultural Center to continue providing an inclusive space at UCSB and a broad spectrum of educational events advocating for social justice. The MCC serves as a bridge for the entire campus community by recognizing the need to cater to diverse identities and value orientations, building coalitions among student groups, as well as increasing communication among people of different cultures and backgrounds.

In its 30th year, the MCC continues to reflect its original mission of serving as a space that was established BY, and FOR, students to provide a welcoming, safe space to fight all forms of discrimination and oppression. Moreover, the MCC strives to ensure that students have the resources and services to thrive by offering free event spaces and AV support for student organizations, free food and refreshments during study jams, student jobs, and User Group event funding. Your support will also help continue the operation of our 150-seat theater, lounge and study space, meeting room, and kitchen which are all open for student use.

By reaffirming the MCC’s lock-in fees of $3.72 per quarter, your fees will continue to support over 100 events and programs per year which are open to the general public. Voting YES to reaffirm the MCC’s lock-in fees will continue your fee contribution that already supports the MCC with no increase to the fees you already pay!

On Monday, April 15th, please join us for the first workshop this spring quarter in the Empowering Student Leaders Series, Saving My Femmenergy From Men and Toxic Masculinities by Ruben Gil (aka Q***r Xicano Chisme / https://itqxc.com). This workshop will be held at the MCC Lounge at 6:30pm.

In this workshop, we will unpack the ways in which we are socialized to devalue femininity and uphold masculinity, and by proxy cisgender heterosexual men.The workshop will cover how emotional labor is expected of women and femmes but is undervalued because we are taught to uphold gendered power dynamics. Additionally, we'll cover how the gendered power imbalance lends to the perpetuation of r**e culture. Moreover, we will cover how toxic masculinity appears in our everyday lives and what actions we can take to undo the damage it causes, as well as keep ourselves from becoming vessels for it.

RSVP: https://forms.gle/b5nDsm2eEcjy6Tib9

Light dinner will be provided.

The MCC's 6th Annual Social Justice Conference (SJCON) is taking place Saturday, April 20th! We highly encourage you all to attend and take part in a day-long series of workshops and presentations.

As past conferences responded to the cultural and political climate that followed in the wake of the election of the current administration, this year’s SJCON, Engaging the Past, Envisioning Our Future, imagines a future that stands on the foundation of developing and maintaining supportive relationships that uplift the struggles and victories of marginalized communities. To make this happen, the work we do in our communities cannot stand alone; we must tap into the knowledge and network of a collective effort across communities. This conference seeks to center joint historical efforts of past activists, alternative forms of activism in the current moment, and future visions of what collaborations between communities can look like.

To attend this year's conference, please RSVP here:

SJCON is also a student run event which means it requires volunteers. Volunteers from User Groups will earn their group 10 points per person, with a maximum of 3 volunteers. The maximum does not mean only 3 members of your group can volunteer, but does mean that your group can only earn points for up to 3 volunteering members.
