🔥 On May 28, 1989, Operation Ivy played their final concert at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California. Jesse Michaels, Tim Armstrong, Matt Freeman, and Dave Mello closed the chapter on a band that, despite its short existence (1987-1989), became the definitive bridge between hardcore punk and ska, forever defining the sound that would soon explode worldwide with the punk rock of the '90s.
The importance of this concert and the band's immediate dissolution lies in the myth that grew up around it. Operation Ivy rejected offers from major record labels at the height of their popularity, maintaining a golden artistic integrity for the DIY ethos. Their only studio album, "Energy" (1989), is now considered a cornerstone: a 19-track work that fused the speed and rage of punk with Jamaican rhythms.
