“Miss Bethany” doesn’t usually share much about herself, but I feel led to share the story behind this dance.
Last year, I had major abdominal and spinal surgery the day after our showcase and had to have my spine fused. I went into surgery knowing it could have a huge impact on my dancing career, but living in constant chronic pain and barely being able to function wasn’t an alternative.
Shortly after surgery, I was sent a video of Forrest Frank breaking his back and writing “God’s Got My Back” while lying in bed. At the time, I was lying in bed too, wondering what the future would look like. But I knew right then that if I was ever able to return to dancing—not just directing and teaching—I wanted to come back to that song.
Last week, we celebrated our 14th showcase, and I was able not only to perform to this song, but to perform it alongside both of my children, including my son, who is graduating this year.
This song and Forrest’s story brought me encouragement during a season of uncertainty when it was very hard to trust God’s plan. Thank you, Forrest, for being willing to share your journey and point others back to Jesus. The truth is, He really does have our backs.
I also want our dancers to see that setbacks don’t have to be the end of the story. A year ago, dancing again felt impossible. This dance is proof that with faith, perseverance, hard work, and God’s grace, impossible seasons can become testimonies. 🖤🤍
