Trying to get hurdy gurdy strings and keyboard dialed in. This is first time I’ve added an “A” string to one. I set capo to D and was surprised how much it sounds like uilleann pipes. This has been a tough one setting up…still got a ways to go.

Short video of hurdy gurdy before keys are operational. This is just a couple of drones and one melody string, but it’s nice to hear some sound coming out of it at last.

Strings are on, 12 drone capos installed, keys are made, and new bridge made ( I nor the customer liked the old one) Now it’s time to put all the tangents in…they are the little fingers that change the length of the string to change pitch. 12 down and 60 more to go.
It will take a lot more playing to get wheel broken in with right amount of rosin, and get it used to being a wheel and not a cherry tree!

Today, I happened to look at the very first hurdy gurdy I built. I had no plans, no idea how they were supposed to be built or tuned…and only a written description in an old musical encyclopedia. I got some things right, some wrong but it actually played and sounded halfway decent. It just so happens THIS MONTH makes 30 years since I started messing with these things!
