A Movement
Rap artists these days come and go as often as the flu. Although common, they are less often as ‘sick’ as the flu, per se. It takes something really special to stick out from the crowd this day and age; especially when so many seem to sound the same. Nine-teen year old Ironton resident Mac Carter has set that bar for many rap artists in our area.
Mac Carter says he has been messing around with music since he was five years old. “When I was younger, I would just sing songs but I would change the lyrics to something I would have put. Like, a song my sister would play, if I didn’t like it I’d just change up the lyrics,” he said. “Since then I have learned how to write my music, I know how to place my bars, the flow. I’ve learned how to better the layout of the beat basically, just overall improvement in everything.”
Every artist has an influence that turned them onto the rap game and for Mac Carter that influence was New York City rapper 50 Cent. He says the Interscope Records recording artist played a big part in his venture into the rap scene. “Listening to him is what, gave me the idea that I could do it.” Now days, Mac says his main influence is his team, “Hearing Tevin’s new music, Clayton, TK…just the team. That’s the influence right there, the team.”
Coming from an area where there are virtually no outlets for local artists, the ultimate goal is to become known and put their city on the map. With a well-grounded fan base and plenty of self-PR and promoting, Mac Carter managed to make it to the No. 3 spot on Hot New Hip Hops Up-coming Artist Top 100 with the song “Touch the Ground” he did with local rapper Danny Kegstand.
It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, discipline and consistency for one to gain recognition in this industry. Carter says you have to show how hungry you are at every given opportunity. “I’m making this known that this is what I want. If I’m going out and peoples talking about rap, I’m like hey I rap, you know and I’ll spit them something,” he says. “If I’m traveling I’m taking my mic with me just because you never know what’s going to happen that day. Just make it known, that’s how I got where I am today.”
Carter says he would like to see other local artists be more supportive of each other. “I’d like to see more people step out of their element to do something for our community and the city. Whether they’re doing collaborations or creating venues for artists to perform, just support each other.”
Mac Carter takes advantage of every opportunity to perform given to him. If he has to travel, that is something he is more than willing to do. He has a show coming up this month on the 16th in Columbus, OH at Bernie’s and frequents the Whiskey River in South Point, OH. He has a single scheduled to be released in March titled “Liberation” which he says he feels is his best song yet.
