Last June, we traveled to the Netherlands with our Adult children. After returning from our trip, I completed this lithograph: De Tulpenacker. It’s a view of the canal and field from the cottages we stayed at! Scroll through to see the stone used to make the print and the scene that inspired it!

Photos from a recent visit to the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia with the grandkids.

Founded in 1922 by Dr. Albert Barnes, the museum is home to the world’s largest collections of Renoir and Cézanne, as well as works by Van Gogh, Picasso, and remarkable African masks and artifacts. Barnes believed these works belonged in conversation with one another—inviting viewers to slow down, look closely, and draw their own connections across cultures, styles, and time periods.

A meaningful reminder that art is best experienced together, through curiosity, conversation, and shared discovery.

Did you know?

More than 100 pieces can now be viewed online through Jake’s newly designed website—and many are also available to see in person at the studio near Ireton.

There’s something different about experiencing artwork firsthand: seeing the surfaces, understanding the process, and hearing the story behind the work directly from the artist who made it.

Recently, Jake had the opportunity to speak at Bethel Church in Sioux Center on The Power of the Biblical Metaphor, reflecting on the relationship between faith, symbolism, craftsmanship, and the creative process.

Drawing from Psalm 19:1–4, Jeremiah 18:4–6, and Jeremiah 19:10–11, the message explored how Biblical imagery continues to shape the way we see both art and the world around us.

Palette Series – Painted during the 2004 sabbatical, when I was revisiting oil painting and perfecting Plene Aire style painting. I’m a cheap Dutchman and didn’t want to waste paint left on a palette from a previous painting. It developed a bit on its own and became a mysterious abstract that is now part of the Apocalyptic Vision exhibit, which investigates spiritual mystery.

‘One should not be a slave to the subject, but use your skills and experience to nurture the work of art, to let it speak on its own terms, adding to the mystery of images and discourse.’ J. Van Wyk
