Glaze night at the studio!

Students from the recent class with Sioux Center Arts were hard at work preparing their pieces for their final firing. After successfully completing the bisque firing, each student had the opportunity to explore a variety of finishes using 10 different glazes and stains applied by dipping, pouring, and spraying.

Everyone followed directions well, experimented with confidence, and created some beautiful work along the way. Now the final firing is complete, and the pieces will soon be ready to head home with their makers.

After the fire, Dordt University put together this great video highlighting my new studio and how I stay active with creating after retirement.
Did you know you can stop by the studio to view any of my available art for purchase?
I'd be happy to schedule a time for you to view my collection or to chat about a specific request or commission!

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Some works ask the viewer to pause. Others invite them to step inside the story.

The Coming is an immersive clay installation measuring 8 by 12 feet and weighing more than 2,500 pounds. Featuring the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, demons, and an angel of the Lord, the work explores themes of judgment, conflict, and divine authority through dramatic scale and movement.

First displayed during ArtPrize 2014 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the piece remains one of Jake's most memorable large-scale installations.

Jake recently hosted a clay class in partnership with -- here are a few photos of our time together. Everyone had a productive time making handbuilt pieces. One can clearly see good work being made, and the group of 17 people had a great time!
Stay tuned for more photos from glazing at the studio and the firing in the kiln!

Jake gave a demonstration as part of his talk at Bethel CRC earlier this month. As he was demonstrating how to make a pot on the wheel, he shared, "You can not create a pot unless it is centered on the wheel - similarly, we as believers must be centered in Christ. We need to do our best to stay centered because if we are not, things can fall apart - just as the post will fall apart if it is not centered on the wheel."

Last June, we traveled to the Netherlands with our Adult children. After returning from our trip, I completed this lithograph: De Tulpenacker. It’s a view of the canal and field from the cottages we stayed at! Scroll through to see the stone used to make the print and the scene that inspired it!

Photos from a recent visit to the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia with the grandkids.

Founded in 1922 by Dr. Albert Barnes, the museum is home to the world’s largest collections of Renoir and Cézanne, as well as works by Van Gogh, Picasso, and remarkable African masks and artifacts. Barnes believed these works belonged in conversation with one another—inviting viewers to slow down, look closely, and draw their own connections across cultures, styles, and time periods.

A meaningful reminder that art is best experienced together, through curiosity, conversation, and shared discovery.
