It’s September now. It’s ***dePreventionMonth. It’s lucky I’m here to talk about it. So here are two new poems for you.

This year, my heart was challenged in more ways than one. I spiraled. It got scary for a while. I’ve been in that place a few times before in my life. This time, though, I let my people in. I allowed my closest people serve as my first responders. I granted myself the prevention service that comes from leaning on my people.

Like every other time, poetry once again saved me. From writing through the feelings to being in poetry spaces, it saved me again. This community and this craft can work wonders on a heart.

I am back in therapy, and it feels good. I feel revived this time. I’m still going to have hard moments, but the momentum of the past few good weeks is keeping me hopeful that I’ll keep surviving.

Thank you for being here. Thank you for wanting me to be here. The love and support you all send my way doesn’t go unnoticed. From the comments, DMs, convos at a show, and letters, I feel the love and know I deserve goodness. You all are wonderful, and I hope you know how loved you are too.

If you are struggling, please let your people in or find someone who will listen. If you know someone who is struggling, a phone call about anything can go a long way. If you have strong friends in your life who seem perfectly fine, check on them. Su***de prevention is a team effort.

I love you all, and I’m grateful to be alive at the same time as you 💛

4 years ago today I put in my two weeks at my corporate job to pursue poetry full time. I had a completely different life at that point, and objectively it was a good life. But I didn't want to live that way anymore. I wanted to answer the call and be my full self.

I kept saying, "If it doesn't work out, then it was one year, and I can say I tried. Or it's a year, and I keep going.”

It's now 4 challenging, beautiful years later, and I am still going and am at a point where I see this becoming truly sustainable long term.

I am so grateful for everyone who has supported me along the way. You are why I get to do this work. Thank you 💛

Sometimes writing helps us find our way through. In Poetry as a Coping Tool, Kelsey Bigelow guides writers through poetry practices for processing grief, loss, trauma, and difficult emotions. Through prompts, free writing, poetic forms, and the work of contemporary poets, participants explore writing as a way to process and move through challenging experiences. https://www.riverheronreview.com/poetry-as-a-coping-tool

Felt good to be back around the DSM poetry fam tonight 💛

The only thing cooler than new poets is new poets placing and going home with prizes!
New poets, new audience members, and a great vibe all night.

Our top readers were Kelsey Bigelow - Poetry, Josephine, and Isabella.

Anna Zilbermints was not only a great host but our sacrifice!

BeerStyles was again a great host with a fun space.

Look up Poetry UnPlugged for a chance next week to share without rules. And Kelsey for a chance to become a better poet with other poets.

See you in September on the 15th.

Kevin and Anna

🥊 ADULTS VS YOUTH 🥊

For the first time ever, IC Speaks (the Iowa youth team) is competing against io-what (the Iowa adult team)!!

We went to Boston to represent Iowa at the NorthBeast Regional Poetry Festival, took home second place and Best Group Piece, and now we’re ready to show you what we’re made of!

We love the youth team, but we’re gonna bring the heat 🔥🎤

See you on September 7th at 6:30 p.m. at The James Theater in Iowa City!

I am not teaching the same workshop twice this fall and they're spread across a few different organizations. So find one (or a few) that you like, and go check them out! I hope to see you around 💛
