In just a few short weeks, we’ll all be gathering in Iowa City for ITEC 2019. Traveling with a tuba or euphonium can be stressful and challenging, so here are some tips to make your voyage a little easier:
Check the “Travel and Housing” tab on the ITEC website for information about airports, buses, maps and hotels.
Book your hotel! The Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference Center is the official ITEC hotel. They have extended our cutoff date to Saturday, May 18th, so make sure to reserve your room very soon!
Register for ITEC here. You will need to be a member of ITEA and use your credentials (email and password) to register.
The nearest airport is the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (airport code CID), which is a 30-minute drive to Iowa City. There are airport shuttles for hire, rental cars available and taxis and Uber will cost between $30 and $40.
Most international and domestic flights will connect in Chicago at O’hare International Airport (ORD). NOTE: If your are flying internationally and your final destination is Chicago, or any other airport than the Southeast Iowa Airport (CID) you will be responsible for arranging your own transportation to Iowa City. Adding a connecting flight from ORD to CID may be easier than taking a bus or renting a car. Connecting flights to Cedar Rapids are about 30 minutes. Keep in mind that it is a 4-hour drive to Iowa City from Chicago. Greyhound, Trailways and Megabus offer inexpensive bus routes to Iowa City or Coralville. Make sure to check the location of where to get the bus and where it drops you off.
Amtrak’s “California Zephyr” train from Chicago to San Francisco stops at two nearby train stations in Burlington, Iowa (90-minute drive) and Mt. Pleasant, (one-hour drive). Keep in mind you will need to rent a car or take a bus to Iowa City. Greyhound has a bus from Mt. Pleasant to Iowa City for $21 one-way, but the bus station is a 5-minute taxi ride from the Amtrak station. Trailways offers a bus from Burlington for $26 one-way, but the bus station is a 10-minute taxi ride from the Amtrak station.
Once at ITEC, if you are staying at the Coralville Marriott, free bus transportation will be provided by ITEC to the Voxman Music Building at regular intervals throughout the day. If you are staying in the Peterson Hall Dormitory it is a 10-minute walk to the Voxman Music Building. The University of Iowa offers a free on-campus bus system called Cambus with regular routes around campus. Download the real-time transportation BONGO app to see how many minutes away your bus is.
Getting around Iowa City and Coralville is easy. There are dozens of restaurants, bars and coffee shops within a few blocks of the Voxman Music building and the Coralville Marriot is located at the Iowa River Landing. Check out the ITEC 2019 Google Map to find the ITEC location, parking, food, drink and sites of interest.
For information about the area, including local information and points of interest, check out the “About” link on the ITEC website.
If you are flying, make sure to check your airlines check baggage rules and oversize/overweight regulation and fees. Be sure to use a good flight case and immobilize your instrument within the case to decrease the odds of damage.
There are five parking facilities within a few blocks of the Voxman Music Building (listed on the ITEC 2019 Google Map) as well as metered street parking around the building. The rate at the parking facilities is $1 per hour, with the first hour free. Guests at the Coralville Marriott are provided with one car complimentary self-parking per room per night. Do not contact the University Parking office unless you are staying at the dormitory and need to park there.
