I just posted on my "regular" page that my scarves will be appearing at Prairie Lights by this afternoon.

For many years I have been interested in the history of writing as mark making. I'm enchanted with the patterns of cuneiform on clay tablets and vessels, especially as they changed over time, from random marks to more formalized patterns of meaning. I am using cuneiform-like images as spacial patterns. There are no translatable messages. The cuneiform-like images have found theri way onto my scarves, book covers, too - printed, painted or stenciled. All of these will be featured in my booth at the Iowa City Eastside Artists Show and Sale, December 2, 3, and 4 at the Masonic Building, just down from the Iowa City Public Library.

Part of the beauty of silk is that it reflects and refracts the light, creating the shimmer we see. This quality also makes it difficult to photograph. My scarves this year are in more somber colors of darker blues, greys, reds and oranges. They are dyed, overdyed, or printed with images. I have used a variety of image makers- interested in what happens to dye when it is applied in non-traditional ways.

The Veiled Virgin. Carrara marble statue by Italian sculptor Giovanni Strazza (1818–1875). The veil gives the appearance of being translucent, but in fact is carved of marble.

Over the last couple of weeks I started and finished new work and finished a couple of pieces that have been waiting to be finished for a time or two. I continue to use found objects, often found paper in my studio. The use of pebbles and rocks are grounding for me. I'll be adding more soon.

Adding more of my work for the Eastside Artists Sale! Small book garlands and "flag garlands". Some of the books in the garlands have several pages - maybe for writing notes, recording holiday memories, little poems, names and dates or whatever comes to your mind.
