Somewhere along the way, Halloween became another thing we’re supposed to buy.

But I think we’re missing out on the best part: standing in a room surrounded by cardboard, masking tape, paint, and questionable materials, trying to turn a completely ridiculous idea into something you can wear.

And then wearing it. In public. Like it’s a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Here are 20 weird Halloween costume ideas, rated for difficulty by me, an artist with a lot of experience making things that probably don’t need to exist.

Some you can make in an afternoon. Others require patience, structural engineering, and possibly a complete disregard for your other responsibilities.

I think one of the saddest things about adulthood is how many wonderfully unnecessary things we stop making.

So here’s your invitation to make something completely absurd.

(And please post or send me the picture, I’m dying to see!)

One of the creatures who knows me best in the world has absolutely no idea who I pretend to be on the outside.

Finn doesn’t know what I do for a living, what I’ve accomplished, what I’m worried about, or why I spend so much time staring at paintings.

But he knows the sound of my footsteps. He knows when I’m sad. He knows exactly where I am in the house at all times, and considers it his responsibility to put as much of his 85-pound body against mine as physically possible.

Today I’ve been thinking about how much of being known has nothing to do with being explained.

He just knows me as another animal. One he really, really likes.

West Marin: come make an extremely weird Halloween costume with us.

This is officially happening. Two Fridays, 20 costumes, a lot of cardboard, and hopefully some truly questionable decisions.

Friday, October 16 + Friday, October 23
10am– 2pm
Point Reyes Library
FREE

We’ll have cardboard, papier-mâché, paint, wire, tape, thrift-store things, tools, and a few artists/makers around to help figure out how to turn whatever strange thing you want to put on your head/body into something that actually exists.

You do NOT need to know what you’re doing. All ages are welcome. Children + younger teens need an adult who will actively help make their costume.

If you already have an idea, excellent. After registering, send me a drawing/photo/inspiration image and I can tell you if there’s anything weirdly specific you should bring.

No idea? Also excellent. I’ll have a pile of bad ideas ready for you.

There are 20 costume spots, with 10 reserved for local residents. Please register only if you can attend both days.

Register in person or by calling the Point Reyes Library at (415) 663-8375 (they are not open every day but you do need to speak to a librarian in order to register, a message is not enough).

And if you can’t make these dates—or it fills before you get a spot—I’m planning at least one more weird costume-making event. Stay tuned.

Apparently I’m still exactly the same person I was 30 years ago.

Today I had my first Slurpee in probably 30 years. Please don’t come for me, Kristin Lawless 😂

There is a beautiful community of people here working to keep herbicides out of Tahoe’s forests Protect Tahoe The Glyphosate Girl Tara Thornton

And I spent hours at the shoreline looking for carnelians, something I loved doing as a kid.

Turns out if I loved doing something 30 years ago, I probably still love it today. My 12 year old self would be proud 💗

Maybe getting older is partly figuring out which parts of yourself were there before you started trying to become someone else.

West Marin: I have a bad idea I would very much like to make real.

I want to host a night where a bunch of us get together and make extremely weird Halloween costumes.

Cardboard. Papier-mâché. Fabric. Wire. Paint. Thrift-store things. Glue guns. Enormous heads. Impractical objects. Ideas that sound questionable but somehow become excellent.

I’m an artist, and I’m happy to take the lead on the creative part of the event. If you show me the bizarre thing you want to put on your head/body, I’m reasonably confident we can figure out some way to make it exist.

What I need is a West Marin co-conspirator: ideally someone with access to a space who can help with the logistical side: location, sign-ups, organizing material costs, getting people in the room.

I want this to be LOW BUDGET / HIGH AMBITION. We can reuse, scavenge, share and bring what we have. Anything we actually need to buy just needs to get covered at cost.

Mostly, I want a room full of people making ridiculous things together. FUN!

Have a barn / studio / spacw? Know the person who does? Send this to them or DM me.

We have 29 days. That seems like plenty.
