As IGHCT begins rehearsals this week for Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, we thought it would be fun to look back at the fascinating history of this beloved musical!

Cinderella first premiered in 1957 as a CBS television musical starring Julie Andrews, who was simultaneously appearing on Broadway in My Fair Lady. It was the first original musical ever created specifically for television. Rodgers and Hammerstein were persuaded to take on the project largely because of the opportunity to work with Andrews. Broadcast live in color (with a delayed black-and-white broadcast for the West Coast), the production was viewed by more than 60% of American households and earned Emmy nominations for both Andrews and Rodgers.

Following successful stage productions, CBS produced a new television version in 1965 with script revisions and musical changes. Eighteen-year-old Lesley Ann Warren starred as Cinderella. The broadcast earned a Nielsen rating of 42.3, making it the highest-rated non-sports special on CBS—a record that stood until 2009.

Interest in television musicals surged again after the success of Gypsy in 1993. Whitney Houston proposed a new adaptation of Cinderella, originally envisioning herself in the title role. After several years of delays, she passed the role to singer Brandy and took on the part of the Fairy Godmother. Featuring a racially diverse cast, new songs, updated orchestrations, and story changes, the 1997 production drew 60 million viewers and became another critical and commercial success.

Broadway finally got its first production of Cinderella in 2013 at the Broadway Theatre. Douglas Carter Beane created a new book for the show, while the score combined familiar favorites with additional Rodgers & Hammerstein songs. Eagan native Laura Osnes originated the title role, later succeeded by Keke Palmer, who became the first African American actress to play Cinderella on Broadway. The production ran for 770 performances and received nine Tony Award nominations.

IGHCT will be presenting the 2013 Broadway version of Cinderella this summer! Performances are July 31, August 1–2, and August 7–9. We hope you’ll bring the whole family and join us for this magical musical adventure!
