Meet our 2026-27 Conducting Fellow, Joe Gilbar!

Here is a little about Joe:

"My name is Joseph Gilbar and I am an incoming graduate student at Butler University. I graduated with my Bachelors of Music in the Spring of 2026 from the University of Wyoming. During my time in Wyoming, I performed as the cover soloist for the Messiah in 2025, sang in numerous masterclasses, and was a frequent finalist in the NATS competition. I love singing in choral settings and some of my favorite musical memories are performing Brahms' Requiem and Mozart's Requiem, along with any other larger works we had the chance to perform. Outside of music, I love hanging out with our family dogs, hiking, and reading! I am greatly looking forward to being a part of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir this coming season. "

We are looking forward to having you, Joe! Welcome to Indy!

Then vs Now: Conductor Edition.

Not only are we celebrating our 90th season, but we are also celebrating 25 years with Artistic Director, Dr. Eric Stark, and Assistant Artistic Director, Dr. Michael Davis!

There is no telling what mischief these two will get up to, but we are so grateful for their continued service and leadership with the ISC.

Ever wondered who started it all?

Our very first artistic director was Elmer Steffen. An Indianapolis native, Steffen got his start music-directing Catholic mass services and eventually became the archdiocesan director of music. In 1924, he founded the Mendelssohn Choir, which was the predecessor of the ISC. Then in 1937, at the request of Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Director Fabien Sevitsky, the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir was born, and Steffen was named its first artistic director.

You may hear some of our choir members referred to as "Steffen Singers." These singers are given this title when they have served the choir for 20+ years. This title is, of course, named after Elmer Steffen, whose impact on the Symphonic Choir and the greater Indianapolis area is still felt today.
