Today, we honor Juneteenth — a day of profound significance in American history.

As a community rooted in the pursuit of human performance and wellbeing, AASP recognizes that equity and justice are inseparable from that mission. We invite our community to sit with its history, engage in meaningful conversation, and remain committed to the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice.

Developing the ability to shift between a soft, broad focus and a sharp, targeted focus is a critical performance skill. Tracy Carrington explains that while staying “locked in” is essential, maintaining an intense focus for too long can create strain, tension, and performance fatigue. To counter this, she outlines how athletes can build visual endurance by learning to intentionally transition between soft and sharp focus during competition. Supporting LGBTQIA+ athletes goes beyond visibility; it also means continuing to learn, engage, and advocate for more inclusive sporting environments.

The AASP Pride (LGBTQ+) SIG encourages practitioners to stay current on research, participate in training opportunities, and connect with organizations advancing this work, such as the NGBA - National Gay Basketball Association, which is dedicated to providing the LGBTQ+ community with a well-organized, supportive and welcoming sporting environment.
