The Right of Way

The Right of Way Composed from interviews, this documentary play asks who really has the right of way on city streets - and how those ideas may be changing.

On December 6, 2013, 28 year-old Hector Avalos was riding his bicycle home from work when he was struck and killed by a drunk driver on Chicago's West Side. Composed from interviews with Avalos's family, transportation experts, urban planners, law enforcement, automobile historians, and bicycling activists, this documentary play asks who really has the right of way on city streets - and how those

ideas may be changing. Adapted and directed by Thomas Murray

Supported in part by Actors Theatre of Georgia, Forum Theatre (Washington, D.C.), Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts, and the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology - ICAT.

“Like bicyclists, scooter riders want to get out of car traffic, which means the ranks of people calling for a more efficient, fair and safe allocation of street space — with protected bike lanes, car-free streets, wider sidewalks, etc. — can grow with scooter share.”

After riding electric scooters and seeing their effect on other cities, I’ve come to see them as a net good. They make our cities easier to navigate with technology that’s more green then many other modes of transportation. Even if you’re not interested in riding them, you should appreciate th...

Today we remember Hector Avalos, the bicyclist at the center of our documentary play, on what would have been his 34th birthday.

Heartbroken. This is not an accident. When a driver is “distracted” like this, there is nearly always something preventable at play.

Seven cyclists are recovering in the hospital after being struck by a car in Davie Sunday morning.

Last Wednesday, Bicycle Indiana invited a hometown Chicago cast to read “The Right of Way” as part of the Indiana Bike and Walk Summit in Indianapolis. It was an honor to continue lifting up Hector’s story in another Midwestern city.

The reading of Thomas Murray’s docudrama was directed by Tara Branham, dramaturgy was by Tanuja Jagernauth, and it featured Jazmín Corona, Alejandro Tey, Allyce Torres, Rolo Rodriguez, Elizabeth Nungaray, Emilio Velasco, and Adelina Feldman-Schultz.

Many thanks to Nancy Tibbett for her advocacy, Tabor Law Firm, LLP for underwriting the public performance, and to Chicago Dramatists for their pre-production support.

After Macon residents became acclimated to the bike grid, Rogers says, the culture changed.

“It was no longer a political issue. It was no longer a class issue. It was no longer an infrastructure issue,” he says. “It was, like, we have all this asphalt, and we’re not using it. Why not let people bike around?”

Duplicating those results would be a little... utopian for a city like Philly. But a temporary bike grid would likely make cycling safer in areas outside of Center City.

Last weekend, we shared “The Right of Way” on video at the American Planning Association national conference in New Orleans! We were grateful for the conversation about how the performing arts can be an effective tool for transportation planning! 🚲

Many hailed the advent of the self-driving car as a way to make the roads safer. But with the first pedestrian killed by a self-driving car in March, the incident reminds us that cyclists and pedestrians are still in danger as long as the roads are primarily built for cars rather than other forms of sustainable transportation, according to Outside Magazine. http://bit.ly/2H9nNI4

Our play doesn’t specifically mention the Dutch Reach, but it’s a phenomenal tactic to cut down on “dooring” incidents. It should be the future of driver education in our country.
