Defiance Comedy gets a lot of their performers from the improv ranks. That's where we started -- a bunch of improvisers putting on show at the White Rabbit Cabaret.

If you're into improv and want to see how it can translate to theatre, come on out to the IF Theatre and check it out. Also, come even if you aren't into improv but want to see a weird Christmas Musical performed by some of the best performers in the city.

Defiance Comedy is back for the holidays! Our eighth annual holiday musical at the IF Theatre takes on the mother of all Christmas movies — complete with original songs, questionable decisions, and the kind of irreverent humor that makes the season bright.

Why You Should Take an Improv Class

After nearly every Defiance show, someone comes up to me and asks, “How do I get involved in this? My answer to that question is always the same: Take an improv class. That’s how I got started.

I had never considered taking an improv class. Why would I? I wasn’t a comedian. I was an actor—or at least, I was trying to be. In truth, at the time I barely qualified as a functional human. I was fresh out of college—or rather, I was fresh out of trying to go to college. I’d left because, honestly, I didn’t know what I was doing there. Around the same time I went through a breakup so bad it could have been a country song. Picture it: a guy sitting on the floor, eating cereal straight out of the box, staring into the middle distance like a tragic hero. That was me.

Then, a friend suggested improv. At first, I thought they were joking, which, ironically, they weren’t. “You should take an improv class,” they said, as if that was a normal thing people said to other people who were emotionally eating Golden Grahams. But because I was desperate (and out of cereal), I signed up.

The first class was terrifying. I found myself standing in a room with total strangers, who for some reason, kept making me pretend to be a talking lamp. It was ridiculous. It was weird. And by the end of those two hours, I couldn’t stop laughing. I was hooked.

But here’s the thing about improv: it’s not just about learning to “Yes, and…” your way through life. It teaches you how to think on your feet, how to collaborate, and how to turn chaos into creativity. It also gave me something I didn’t expect: a community. Week after week, those strangers became friends. We built a little world of trust, creativity, and ridiculousness, and I still keep in touch with many of them today.

But improv isn’t just for aspiring performers. It’s for anyone who wants to build confidence, improve communication, or simply have a blast embracing joyful group weirdness.

We've got an all-star cast of some of Indy's best and brightest improvisors, and the whole thing is hosted by Joe Wagner. Then we invite you to jump in for an Improv Jam after the show.
