This work is the 3rd part of my Black Men’s Mental Health series, exploring the psychological toll of being expected to lead while feeling invisible. It speaks to the pain of being present, responsible, and strong and yet his voice is unheard. What you can see in this piece, are words being spoken, however, the words are illegible because they aren't being heard by anyone. The crown is still there, but it’s surrounded by chaos, confusion, rejection, and neglect, challenging viewers to consider what it truly costs to carry the weight of that crown in silence. What remains is heartbreak, and this emotional silence becomes a slow breakdown of his mental state. Without touch and affection and the affirmation from those closest to him, he begins to unravel.
These experiences from my series do not aim to define or represent every Black man's experience, but rather to shine a light on the often-unspoken realities that many endure. It speaks to the emotional weight, the internal battles, and the societal expectations that contribute to mental and emotional strain. Through color, texture, and symbolism, this body of work seeks to honor vulnerability, spark conversation, and create space for healing.
