The directors Will introduce ourselves and we will discuss upcoming events and how students can be involved in the Theatre department.

The meeting Will take place in O112 (the Green Room) and possibly move to the theater if we don’t have enough room.

I hope any students interested in acting, writing, improvising, or working on the crew make sure to attend!

Good afternoon students, family and community members,

The first day of the new school year is just around the corner and after many difficult years, it is time for a fresh start, especially in the Theatre department.

This year has so many things in store:

1. Our theater space is completed and classes will be able to utilize the stage again during the school day

2. We will be working with Ben Davis Publications to bring back Coffeehouse Talent Shows as a way to highlight the many talents of our students. Information for that will be coming to you on social media soon.

3. Student-Directed plays are returning in the Spring. This is a chance for students to get some experience casting, directing, and producing their own production. More info will be coming after the new year.

4. And finally, I would like to announce that we will be performing the off-Broadway show, “Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic” this coming March. Auditions for that show will take place in December with rehearsals running from December to March. It is a fast, frantic comedic show that will utilize amazing props, lights, and sounds to tell a hilarious and heartwarming tale about friendship and belonging.

TLDR: We have a great year of theatrical classes, performances, and creative opportunities planned for you all. School returns Wednesday, July 27th and we can’t wait to see you all.

that the annual Benny Awards were created by Mr. Owens and Mr. Montgomery way back in 2008 to celebrate the hard work by BD Theatre cast and crew?

Here's a photo of attendees in May, 2016.

A note from Mr. Owens:

In 2002, I began my journey as a teacher, accepting a position as Theatre Magnet Director at Broad Ripple High School. In 2008, I was hired as the Theatre Director at Ben Davis High School. In the 14 years since, Mr. Mark Montgomery, Ms. Janis Schoo, and Mrs. Angela Barnes and I have accomplished a lot. We couldn't have done it all without the talents and dedication of literally thousands of students over the years.

We also couldn't have done all of that without the support of families and the Wayne community. For those things I am grateful. It hasn't always been easy (is anything?) but it has always been rewarding. Beginning in the 22-23 school year, I will be stepping away from my position as Theatre Director at Ben Davis. After twenty years in education, with nearly fifteen at BDHS, I'm looking forward to new challenges. I will focus on writing books and I am halfway through my second Masters degree, this one in Educational Leadership, and who knows where that will lead! In the immediate future, I plan to continue teaching Speech at Ben Davis, a position I have held as faculty at Ivy Tech since 2008.

I want to thank all those who have been supportive of my efforts, and of the Ben Davis Theatre Department. The performing arts are often given short shrift, cut from school budgets, and ignored in favor of more lucrative extra curricular endeavors. There are some, however, who continue to be cheerleaders for the Theatre department and for the students. As a lifelong Theatre practitioner, I can tell you that a little support goes a long way. So thanks again to all those who have lifted us up. The performing arts need you now more than ever.

And to the current BD Theatre student actors and crew, and the future Theatre Director, I say "break a leg!"
