I have always been attracted to contrast and shadows. This orchid that is in my home is in the perfect spot for morning light. I have several pictures of it and finally decided to paint it. This oil painting is 20x24 inches.

Centre, Alabama

I have been using Doodles for the past 18 months to feel grounded during episodes of social anxiety and other times when I would shrink or hide. It has helped me seet my nervous system into a wait and see mode instead of automatically checking out. I literally start with a swirl here and there and then by magic, the things I am struggling with beneath my skin, materialize through the pens that seem random.
For this drawing, I am in the midst of caring for my Dad in Alabama as he enters the end stage of life.
Though I am from Indiana, my life has been uprooted for the foreseeable future.
As I have been feeling unsettled here, I began to doodle this little guy. Trying to mesh as many little critters as I could into one cohesive being. I am wearing so many hats right now. Meshing my many worlds and lives into one little guy who is riding above the waves of uncertainty. Being pushed away and simultaneously pulled in until I feel suffocated. As the waves materialized beneath him, I realized they are giving color to an otherwise numb existence. He doesn't recognize who he is yet. He doesn't have his own color yet, but its coming. The waves that want to pull him under are the same ones that give him the joy to keep flying.

This oil painting is based on photo I took in rural Vevay, Indiana around 4 years ago. I am visually attracted to light and contrast, especially in nature. The golden hour in the evening is my favorite time of day.

Sunset on our kitchen counter on NW side of the Indianapolis.

Sometimes the best art opportunities last only a few moments. That's why I have my Iphone 14 with me at all times, even in our kitchen. This is a natural image. The water glass was on our kitchen counter as the early Spring sunset streamed across our patio, through the sliding doors and ultimately through the glass. It wasn't moved to "make it better." It created a wonderful high contrast backlit abstract. The light lasted only a few moments. The only post processing was converting it to a high contrast black and white image. I'm gratified you find it interesting. Thanks!

"Burning Through The Mist"

15" x 11" watercolor of a stormy morning in Michigan as the sun begins to burn through the fog and mist. Almost a spiritual time. Inspired by a photo by Tim Skinner and used with his permission.
Painted using QoR watercolors on Arches 300 # Cold-pressed watercolor paper.
