Tonight I close my exhibit of Poetics of Space in Columbus, Indiana and I am proud to say that some of the work will go on to Florence, Italy for an exhibit in May, then on to the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo in September.

PoeticsofSpaceNo.07_GirardAlphabet. My modernist series begins with a sketch on canvas as the beginning of the composition. In the exhibit "Poetics of Space, Living with Modernism" there are symbols and clues within each painting celebrating the architects and designers of classic Columbus Indiana modernist structures. I.M. Pei, Alexander Girard, Eero Saarinen, Eliei Sarrinen, Henry Moore, Myron Goldsmith and many others are part of the story and inspiration. The crimson red underpainting creates a spark and contrast to the building of the color palette. In this painting, Poetics of Space No. 07, the composition is a matrix of the overlapping letterforms from Girard's Font. The numbers and letters hidden in the composition recognize 1957, A + G to signify the year Girard completed work on the Miller House in Columbus, Indiana. The exhibit runs through March. Visit Gallery 506 at the Columbus Area Visitors Center to see the show. A collector once said "when you buy a contemporary artwork, you belong; you become part of a club. It's a lifestyle." Poetics of Space 04. Republic Building. This building was out of the ordinary, not just in its unique design for a news office, but for a printing company. The press took the front seat in the picture windows in its early history, turning the iron into kinetic sculpture. I hope to honor its history and beauty with this interpretation of an extraordinary building, now the IU School of Architecture. Oil on canvas 36 x 36. Poetics of Space. Living With Modernism. Lloyd Brooks has built a career spanning design, teaching, and fine arts, with formative experiences in cultural exchanges in Russia, Taiwan, and China. His artistic practice reflects a lifelong engagement with modernism, Renaissance influence, and the interplay of architecture and nature.

Poetics of Space is a feeling. It is influenced by beauty and harmony of the architecture and design found in the realm of modernism. Poetics of Space concerns our human engagement with sacred spaces. Influenced by beauty, harmony, and a confluence of contrast (symmetry and asymmetry), it is possible to experience a profound, intimate relationship with those spaces around us. The modernism of Columbus architecture, and the familiarity of sacred spaces in this community is at the heart of this artistic exploration.
