From the music director:

In early January, our cast got together to read through our script for the first time. Since that day, we have had a common prayer: that our audiences would see the faithfulness of Jesus in all of it. If you know the story of Esther, you’re probably already familiar with the lessons of morality that can be found: “Be brave like Esther!” “Be faithful like Mordecai!” or even, “Don’t be proud like Haman!”

But the richness of the story extends much further. For believers in Jesus, the significance in the book of Esther is that it hints at our Good News to come. This story centers on a decree of death given to the Jewish people which is ultimately reversed to life, just as our own penalty of sin has been paid through the Messiah’s substitutionary sacrifice. Throughout the entire Old Testament, we are taken on a journey, pointing to Jesus again and again. In the book of Esther, He is our deliverer, our sacrificial lamb, and our mediator - all foreshadowed in this beautiful, and deeply Jewish, story.

As a musical, the familial story of Esther captures larger-than-life characters and brings their stories to the stage. Did you know that the pompous Haman, the right-hand man to King Xerxes, was ultimately hung on the very gallows that he had constructed to hang his enemy Mordecai? Or that Queen Vashti rebelled against her husband when he called for her to present as “entertainment” - a decision that cost her her crown? Or that Esther was chosen to be queen through a year-long beauty pageant? All bizarrely true moments in Persian history.

In retelling this beautiful story, we hope that you’ll be mesmerized by our reflection of Jewish culture. Our team of student costumers has brought beautiful fabrics and accessories to the stage. All of the choreography, also student-led, is inspired by stunning Persian dance. The music is written with a multi-generational audience in mind. This show has it all: heart-pounding drum solos, middle-eastern inspired love songs, and over-the-top ensemble tunes that will make you laugh ‘til your sides hurt. We can’t wait for you to experience all of it!

Before you come, though, would you let us know how we can pray for you? Our final performance of the year is Sunday at 3. For a few quiet moments before each show, our cast and crew gather to pray over each guest who will come through our doors. Please reach out to any one of us in person or through social media and tell us how we can pray for you specifically. Invite your neighbors, bring your family, and introduce yourself to us on Sunday.
Welcome, my friends, …… to Persia!

I’ve been on and off helping with Learning Tree’s musicals for ten years, but this is my first year joining as a co-director with the group. God has been moving wonderfully through the people involved in this show. I have been so blown away by the constant pressing in of faith that this cast and crew has been blessed with.

It’s the little details that you cannot see from an audience on show night. A student sitting in the window reading scripture to ground herself to what matters most. Another student preparing all of the details of backstage organization. Younger helpers stepping in to make sure every moment backstage has snacks, clean outfits, and clear paths to walk. Seeing the transformation of costumes as pieces come into place. Such talent with makeup and hair over weeks of practice to bring it to perfection. Every detail in understanding the secrets of the lighting systems. The details of wires needing to be taped or plugged just right. The moment a student’s character just seems to “click”. The heart behind safety glow taping. The many muscles grown by repeatedly lifting a gigantic elephant of a box. Watching and cheering on a fellow cast member dance to her favorite song in the middle of the makeup room. Four girls coming up with the coolest handshake. Several spike ball competitions. The countless hours devoted by students putting their genius efforts into set design and construction. The breaking of bread among cast members. Many other students checking in multiple times to see how they can improve, how they can be of help, how they can encourage one another. I am brought to tears every moment I think of these things because it is seeing God in action. The environment created here is so spiritually driven; there is no way to avoid it!

For me, it’s seeing our children move from our elementary musicals into the high school musicals and gaining the courage to sing their hearts out. It’s seeing those I’ve known as toddlers and babies becoming teens that firmly root themselves in Christ to boldly proclaim His mercy. This group comes to the stage with everything they allow God to work in them. They are constantly seeking Him in how they perform this show for you. They are trusting Him to provide a way for you. They have prayed for you and wept for you. They have stepped in with full confidence, not in themselves, but in what God is capable of.

Yes, this cast is incredibly talented, and they’ve done a lovely job at bringing this outstanding musical to life. But the relationships with each other and knowing God as provider, deliverer, and strength are the gifts they give to one another far beyond these few months of musical. I have been blessed to join such a wonderful team who yields to what the Lord is bringing to fruition.

Don’t miss your chance to see this production!!

(And don’t mind my tearful mess of a face - I’m just so incredibly proud of them.)

From the Director:

At the beginning of each year, we choose a Scripture verse to guide us. This year it was Proverbs 16:9 — “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

If you really sit with this verse, it’s a little terrifying.

It reminds us that we are not in control. That no matter how carefully we plan, how far ahead we think, how tightly we try to hold everything together… ultimately, we are dependent on God. And for those of us with Type A personalities, that surrender can feel like the hardest part of our spiritual journey.

This year, we planned. We planned a lot. We planned ahead. We had ideas, timelines, expectations—visions of how this musical would look.

And then the Lord began to establish His steps.

Circumstances came that, in the moment, felt like obstacles. Delays. Problems. Changes. But looking back, they were something else entirely—they were moments of mercy. Moments where God gently redirected us, reshaped us, and reminded us that His plan is always better than our own.

Here is the honest truth: not an hour passes during this season that I am not aware of the enormity of what we have taken on. Creating a musical production is daunting in itself. But a musical as an avenue to share God’s story? A musical that guides hearts, souls, and young lives? It is beyond anything I can do in my own strength.

And yet, that’s the point.

Some days it feels like being asked to feed the five thousand. But God isn’t asking me to do that. He’s simply asking me to bring what I have—a couple of loaves and fish—and place it at His feet. To show up. To offer what feels like “not enough”… and trust Him to multiply it.

Every year around this time, I reflect on why we do this. We often say it’s for the growth of the students—and it is. Musical teaches resilience, humility, teamwork, discipline, and faith.

But this year, I’ve been struck by a different truth:

What if it’s not just them who are being grown?

What if, in the process of directing, I am the one being refined—being stripped of pride, being stretched in trust, being reminded again and again that I am not in control?

This story—Esther—is about courage, obedience, and stepping into a calling you didn’t choose, at a time you didn’t expect, with stakes higher than you feel ready for.

And maybe that’s why it feels so personal this year.

Because in so many ways, we’ve all been asked to do the same.

It is an honor to walk alongside these students. It is an honor to witness their growth, their perseverance, and their faith. And it is an even greater honor that God continues to work through something as simple—and as powerful—as a group of people coming together to tell His story.

If nothing else, this year has reminded me of this:

We can plan all we want…

But there is a deep, humbling, beautiful peace in letting God establish the steps.

And somehow, when we do, He always writes a better story than we could have planned ourselves.

Please come and see these teens tell His story with every beautiful part of themselves. They will move you.

If you came to any of our shows last weekend, you had the opportunity to hear a blessing. It is amazing to have something prayed over you. But the last few times I've heard this particular blessing, I keep thinking about these students. We sometimes get them a year and then they find another interest. Sometimes we get the students for six (or more) lovely years in a row, sometimes fewer, but I have been thinking about their future families, and their children, and their children. I want good things for them. I want these moments where we've looked for and seen God move, to be normal in their lives. I want them to be expectant of how God will meet us. And I know He will.

As I look back on six amazing years, now watching my first-musical-season seventh-grade-students graduate this year, I am so thankful for all the growth, all the skills learned, all the fears conquered, and all the relationships formed. I am blessed. He has met us in the little and big moments, He has laid His hand upon us. He will continuing walking with us and guiding us. God is good. My heart is full. ❤️
