This poem was written in ‘94 when I was 15 years old. Back then I was listening to a lot of and remember sitting down to write this poem as, of course, The Cure was playing in the background. Ahhh teenage angst is the best for melancholic meanderings. I guess some things never change, even teenage melancholia. I submitted this poem to a contest and was invited to share it in one of those tabletop Poetry Books 📖📝🖤

I visit my local Coffe Bean often and like to people watch. Without fail, one of the things I see each time I go is a little elderly man (although he has young eyes) with a pretty severe shuffle and a walker for support. It takes him several minutes to get out of his car and walk in; similarly, as he leaves. But this is what I recognize each and every time. Not once has anyone allowed this man to attempt opening the door for himself. Someone ALWAYS gets up to help him (I myself have succumbed a time or two…of course!🥹). I watch the faces of these helpers and it brings a warm glow to my heart.❤️‍🔥 Each of these Stewards of Kindness has a genuine smile on their face, or in their eyes as they assist this gentle-man. It’s the little things that add up to big things, my mom always said, and it is so true. If all you do today is help a little old man walk out the door, you have succeeded in helping to spread light and I think that’s something to be proud of✨
