The house on Maybrook stands vacant, awaiting a makeover and a new family. Only the ghosts and spirits walk the property for now. If you go inside the house and close your eyes you can hear the echoes of family life, children being raised. Something more took place on that property, though. Something unique and special that will live on forever with everyone who had the opportunity to experience it. If you were to walk into the backyard, close your eyes and listen you'll hear the echoes from over a decade. You'll hear the work on a hot summer day; drills, hammers, calls of voices collaborating, lots of cursing, but also laughter and joy as everything comes together to create that special experience. Keep listening and you'll notice the air change to a crisp fall evening and the sounds change; the chatter of a line of people as they anticipate what's to come, the calls of the monsters lurking in falling darkness, the screams of the victims as they meet those monsters, the relieved laughter and picture snapping as they realized they've survived, and above all the roar of a chainsaw. Keep listening a little longer; the crackling of a fire, the chatter of friends and family celebrating success and making plans for an even better experience.
The Yard of Terror has been something special, created and cultivated by those passionate about the holiday and all things spooky who wanted to share that passion with the world. Among those who participated it created bonds and family ties. It gave those in our community the opportunity to experience the spooky season with their friends and families in a way that was accessible and affordable. It also gave back to the community through donating to the Spirit of Children fund. The Yard of Terror was much more than can ever be stated here.
It was a series of events that brought it to it's end. But the Yard is undead and will rise again. It lives on in the hearts of those who loved it the most. It will be resurrected, in a new time and place. And you can be sure that it will come back more terrifying than ever before.
Thank you to everyone who gave any part of yourself to the creation and operation of the Yard. And thank you to every "victim" brave enough to pass through.
We will see you again!

It's with a very heavy heart that we have to announce that The Yard of Terror will no longer exist as it was. The City of Independence has finally crushed us under their boot heel. We had a fire that we were optimistic about recovering from (caused by a covering coming off of some mirrors). However, the city came onto the property with heavy machinery and demoed all of the small standing structures that we had built despite there being no "buildings" according to city code. They removed personal property from the premises that included things like folded tarps on the back porch, a tote of extension cords, and our fake trees that populated Camp Crystal Lake. While we did have a pile of trash, we had an open top dumpster schedule to clean it as well as the aftermath of the fire. They took all items not secured indoors, much of which certainly could not be considered trash, a hazard, or an eye sore. They even destroyed the small fountain that Mike built not long after moving in and broke the statue that sat on it. The city did this with no court order or written affidavit. They know that we don't have the power to fight back. Hopefully we can revive the spirit of The Yard in another time and place.

Thank you for coming out this season and making it a scream! All of us volunteers have thoroughly enjoyed watching the children grow up through the years. And have made friends with some adults! We have helped so many children at Spirit of children at children's Mercy hospital over the past 13 years. I couldn't be prouder to be a part of this group. So happy that all of you guys came out to support and to get scared. Here's to a bigger turnout next year!

Happy Halloween! We will be handing out candy this evening. And while we won't be officially open and there won't be any actors, everyone is welcome to walk through.

Unfortunately, we will not be open tonight due to rain and cold temperatures. The good news is that we will be open for an extra weekend! Come see us next Friday and Saturday 7-10pm for one last weekend of scary fun!

The Yard of Terror is Fox 4 famous! We love what we do and we wouldn't be anything without our amazing fans that come out year after year. Thank you all for showing your support and helping us do what we love and support a great cause!

Happy 13 years of Terror! The Yard is celebrating its 13th anniversary and it's Friday the 13th. I hope you're all ready for an extra special night of scares. Bringing a change of pants is highly recommended. Don't forget to show your love (or fear) by donating when you visit. Come out tonight from 7-10pm for our Bloody Birthday Bash!...
