As you may well known it is the time of year for wildlife to have their young. You can very easily be a hero to nature.

As a wildlife rehabilitator we often get calls for disturbed baby bunny nests. Pets and lawnmowers are the biggest threats we can do something about. All you have to do is take a few moments to WALK YOUR YARD before you mow.
It's simple. Walk around your yard before you mow and look for patches that appear to have dead grass or fur covering them. Momma bunny often only digs a bowl sized hole for her young and will cover them with grass and fur for warmth and protection. If you find some leave them be. Nobody can care for them better than their mother. It may seem like she isn't around but she will be. She stays away most of the time so as not to alert predators (including humans) to the presence of her precious babies. She will only come to feed them twice a day around dawn and dusk and only stay a short amount of time.

If you do find a nest, the easiest way to protect it is to put an upside down laundry basket over top of it and weight it down. It may be helpful to make sure there is an opening just a couple of inches for mom to get in and out to feed them. The little family will only be there for a couple weeks. Baby bunnies are ready to leave the nest at 3 weeks. If you see a baby bunny about the size of a chipmunk that has it's ear up and can hop, it is ready to be out in the world. Just leave them be and keep your pets away from them. THANK YOU SO MUCH for listening and doing your part to help protect wildlife!

If you do find a sick or injured animal, don't feed them. Call a wildlife rehabilitator.
