Some people have asked why we have to remove all of the human remains from the museum before July 1st if the law just pertains to grave robbed items.....

Before synthetic plastic models took over in the late 1980s, real bone was the standard for teaching anatomy—and the sourcing was incredibly dark. For nearly a century, the vast majority of the world’s medical skeletons came from India, which exported up to 60,000 bodies a year by digging up graves under the cover of night or taking unclaimed remains from marginalized communities.

​This modern global trade was the direct evolution of 19th-century grave robbing. During the 1800s, medical schools in the US and Europe grew so fast that thousands of graves were targeted annually by professional body snatchers called "Resurrection Men." Authorities usually looked the other way because doctors desperately needed the anatomy lessons. Ironically, these thieves would strip the corpses naked before leaving; stealing clothes or jewelry was a major felony property crime, but under old laws, a dead body belonged to no one, making body snatching a mere misdemeanor.

​The wild west of the bone trade finally collapsed in 1985 when India banned the export of human remains due to human rights exposes. Shortly after, synthetic plastic molding advanced enough to replace human bones entirely. If you ever spot a real vintage skeleton today, you are looking at a direct relic of grave robbing and the underground "Red Market" that quietly built modern medicine.
