Slippery Crockery by Caitlin Adams

Slippery Crockery by Caitlin Adams Slippery Crockery is a space for art, craft, and vintage things. And so much more. I hope you find a little something that suits you perfectly.

A thrift-store rat since I was a teenager in New York City; raised by an Australian mother who taught me to sew and to repair and/or save what could be reused; a visual gal who has always loved playing with clothing and with painting, though not usually at the same time. I find it inevitable that I have arrived here, at my little virtual shop of arts, vintage, and upcycled wares. I choose, restore

, repair, and upcycle my pieces with great care and I love them all. If you are curious, my shop name, "Slippery Crockery," comes from a blurb on the back cover of my mother's first book of short stories, Lies and Stories: "Glenda Adams...captures her audience by the ease with which she handles the slippery crockery of life." The phrase always appealed to me, and it means so more than a plate that one might drop if one is not careful.

When I see an unusual but damaged wooden bowl at the thrift store, I feel compelled to save it and then repair it to become my "canvas." Stay tuned for what comes next for this piece!

Pieces in progress. Newsprint, tulle, acrylic paint, miscellaneous saved papers, serviettes, images from toy packaging, fabric from a blouse, all on secondhand wood items. Playing!

One thing I love to do: preserve ephemera and "frame" them in unique ways for display and/or practical use. Might be a ripped paper image, might be a piece of fabric from a damaged but meaningful item, might be a drawing by one of my children. So much works!

I love Monet's Rouen Cathedral series. Adore. Significant to me for many reasons. Spotted the series on a newspaper page and saved it. Found the perfect tray at a thrift store. Painted the tray and decoupaged white tulle fabric for the background. Added the newsprint images and more paint to blend the edges. So happy with it. All it needs is to be sealed, then it can be used as a tray, or simply hung on the wall.

What seemingly odd vintage (or not) thing are you drawn to collect?
For me, too many things. One is vintage towels, when I can find them in good condition at a thrift store. They make me happy.
Recent find: a pair of green and white Fieldcrest hand towels. 😍

I am back! The shop is back! Did you miss us?
Since the pandemic began, my online shop and art have been sorely neglected. I am remedying that! Five new original art pieces are finished and listed.
These handmade artworks are on vintage wood boxes, four of them lovely cigar boxes, and are created using various collected papers, fabric, foil, and paint. Each is sealed with layers of cured polyeurethane and can be put to practical use for keepsakes, jewelry, whatever fits that needs a one-of-a-kind container.

Found a pair of these Homco wall hangings in very sorry shape: cracked, gold paint peeling off. I spray painted them with outdoor-grade black and am starting to add details in pink and yellow. I am going to color only the flowers. Depth to come!
