Handmade here in Hutchinson, our Tagine combines a Flameware base designed for direct stovetop heat with a distinctive cone-shaped lid that circulates steam and keeps food tender and flavorful. It’s functional, beautiful, and truly art you can cook with.

If we could recommend one pot for starting a Flameware collection, it would be the Cazuela.

It’s the first pot we reach for when it's time to cook, and for good reason. It can handle everything from sautéing veggies to full meals like this epic Egg Strata shown here.

The best pot isn’t necessarily the fanciest or most specialized. Sometimes it’s the hardworking one that never makes it back into the cupboard.

For the second year in a row, Clay Coyote has been selected as one of the contest’s Top 64 competitors. This year, our handmade Flameware Tagine is in the running, and we need your vote to help it advance.

Inspired by the traditional North African cooking vessel, our Tagine is handmade right here in Hutchinson and designed for modern kitchens. The Flameware base can go directly on the stovetop—no diffuser, soaking, or seasoning required—while its cone-shaped lid continuously returns moisture to the food as it cooks.

The result is tender vegetables, fall-off-the-bone meats, deeply developed flavors, and a beautiful piece of Minnesota pottery that can go from the stovetop to the table.

“Small businesses are the crux of our communities, and it is everything to me to support them.”

For longtime Clay Coyote customer Roxy Janke, choosing handmade means knowing the real people and real hands behind the pottery she brings into her kitchen.

Roxy first visited Clay Coyote years ago, where she toured the pottery, saw the kiln, and met the potters. Since then, she has built her own collection, introduced her daughter to the Coyote, and even brought a small Flameware Frying Pan to the gym so her friends could take turns cooking with it.

Her latest addition is a Flameware Tagine she admired for nearly three years. Although Roxy admits she’s “no Barefoot Contessa” and cooks plenty of hot dish and traditional meals, the tagine has already handled everything she’s tried, including Swiss steak.

That is what we want our pots to be: beautiful enough to catch your eye, useful enough to become part of your life, and durable enough to be shared for years to come.

A piece of Clay Coyote history will be on display at the Hutchinson Center for the Arts this August.
Tom Wirt: Works, Collection & Legacy brings together pottery by Clay Coyote cofounder Tom Wirt, pieces from his later work as New Clay Pottery, and work he collected from other artists over the years. The pieces will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Hutchinson Center for the Arts.

The community is invited to a reception on Wednesday, August 19, from 5:30–7 p.m. The evening will also recognize this year’s Tom Wirt Award recipients, Jenna and Jayson Wall of the Hutchinson State Theatre.
